There is an intermittent whining noise coming from the rear in my new 1999 Disco2 V8. It is not an extremely loud sound but it changes with the revs at low RPMs (1000-1500) and the first time I heard it I thought it was someone honking their horn in the car behind me. Sometimes I cannot hear the sound at all and sometimes it is on quite a lot. I have not been able to determine any sort of pattern when it appears.
Yesterday it came on straight away when I started the car so I went out and listened. I crawled under the rear of the car and I think I have located it to the area above the rear right wheel. Almost exactly behind where the fuel filler lid is located. Can anyone tell me what is behind there? It could be the sound of a whining pump, but I am not sure.
Well, I just found this video on youtube: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2CcV4zwwo0]Discovery 2 Noisy Fuel Pump or Filter - YouTube[/ame]
And that sounds like the noise I hear, but mine is not as loud. I havent had the cover off though.
I had a search through this forum and found quite a bit on noisy fuel pumps. I cannot find anything definite about whether this noise is fine or if I should replace the pump. Does a noisy pump mean it is failing? Can I just replace the fuel filter?
I might be wrong ( I thought I was once before but was mistaken) but I thought it was only the Td5 (diesel) pumps that made that noise. The one in the youtube clip is a Td5 pump.
If the V8 pumps are prone to do it, well yes, you probably need a new pump. Always a good idea to replace the filter as well.
Might I suggest, fill the tank to the top & see if the noise goes away.
Ok, I fuelled up and I haven't heard the noise for a few days now. Not sure if I should prepare to replace the pump or not.
Mate, my V8 does the same thing when I start running low on fuel, it is a build up of pressure in the tank causing air to leak out of the filler cap. Undo the fuel cap next time it does it, might save you from replacing expensive pump! This build up of pressure is normal. Hope this helps!
Thanks Chippy, I'll try that. The noise started today again and the tank is coming to half full.
On another note... The tank is half full and I have only been driving 150km. Half a tank is 45 L so that takes it to 3L/10km. I have been driving mostly around town but doesn't that seem a bit much?
