    Tailgate Latch

    I am seeking advice regarding repair (if possible) of the latching mechanism.
    Unlocking OK, and interior handle opens tailgate OK
    External handle operates freely, but does not unlatch door. I have removed locking mechanism and thoroughly cleaned, inspected & replaced locking washer on pivot which had come off, lubricated & reinstalled but still not opening with external handle.
    Any advice, or exploded drawing of parts detail?

    I had the same trouble with mine and managed to get it to work by moving the rod that conects the handle to the latch . The back of the handle has two holes in it . If you remove the rod and locate it on tne other hole it gives it extra leverage and makes the rod move down further.You have to rotate it 180 and also move the plastic bit that the rod sits in . This has got mine working again , hope it helps you out.

    Thank Freedriver, did as you suggested (just completed) and now operational. I was entertaining the idea of needing to purchase a new lock.

    I have seen a few posts about the rear door lock and it made me think [ ignore swmbo laughing in the background ] . Could this be due to fitting larger tyres [ 265? ] and having that weight hanging off the back door? Just a thought. Bob

    I am sure it is due to the dust factor. It accumulates in the lock and as it is abrasive , wears things . I have had to clean mine out a couple of times already( only got the car in July! ) The engagement surfaces appear to be very iffy and there seems to be not much between working and not. Adding oil/grease will just hasten the downward spiral.

    I think it may be another of those D2 "service" items along with the injector loom! When it feels a little stiff get out the air compressor and blow the dust out of the latch . works for me and should prolong its life But I am budgeting for a new 1 .

    Rear door was always a trial. 14 years worth!

    First fix is to "slot" those two holes to allow the latch handle to rise high enough to unlatch the lock. There was a TB early 2000s.

    I also carried a small brush to remove the dust build-up. Clean out all "wet" lubricants. I found reasonable success with Teflon spray, where the carrier fluid/solvent would eveaporate.

    Best fix is to get the wheel off the door.

    After that you will need to worry about small movement,ie <1mm, in the "child proof" latch. Any movement of that will inhibit the door both from inside and outside.
