Is 8 hours to change ball joint boots reasonable?

The ball joint boots on my D2 have started to disintegrate and my local mechanic says that it will take him 8 hours to replace them, since he has to disassemble the diff and front axle in addition to the wheels and brakes. Is this reasonable or should I try to get a Land Rover mechanic to do it?

The mechanic says that the ball joints are fine since there is no play. But if he will spend 8 hours disassembling everything it is probably best to replace the ball joints at the same time right?

Is there an easier way to get some more life out of my current ball joints? I would like to go off road this weekend but don't want to risk getting dirt in the ball joints.

had mine done for $300 labour, this was by a suspension place they will have the correct presses etc,or as above someone that specialises in landy's.If there is no play in the ball joints there will be no hurry to get them changed.

Probably worth having a look at lewy's thread asking about labour costs to do the job. There is a bit more info about the alternatives.

and Hendrik's DIY thread which shows what is involved

I called the Land Rover mechanic in Rockhampton and while he doesn't have the equipment to change the ball joints he can change the boots in 4 hours. So about half the time compared to my local mechanic.

He said Pedders can change the ball joints, so I will ask them to give me a quote. If it is only a little bit more to change the ball joints I might as well do that too. Otherwise, if it is too expensive I will just get new boots for now. If they are fairly clean it should last another couple of years right?

    ball joints

If it's any help I had mine done recently and it was $800 for the parts and labour - by an experienced LR shop (BOR).

I just got a quote from Pedders in Rockhampton and they will replace the four ball joints for $448 + $60 for wheel alignment, so $508. That doesn't include the ball joints though. They had to investigate further to get a price for the parts.
