Hey Turps, good luck with your transmission. Just make sure they change the oil cooler while they have it out (they are only about $220). If they put the old one back in all the crap from your blown transmission will go into the new one! This happened to mine. It didn't create any real problems but I had it all cleaned out and change of cooler (they are very difficult to clean properly), the trans fluid was a pretty horrible colour. Expect about $4,600-$5k btw

The run out d2 pre face lift in 2002 saw the td5 manual the exact same drive away as the v8 manual... After driving them both back to back I gladly bought the v8 knowing that I would burn more fuel I also think that if your talking owning a d2 to high k rebuilds then there is nothing between them in overall running costs including rebuild. Of course when you add LPG to a d2.v8 which is a motor that doesn't suffer at all from LPG then it's a different ball game.

    Cheers

Add a camshaft and lifters every 100k km and a tophat block and the td5 is way ahead.
But the V8 is better off the traffic lights drag strip...

If you have to do a full block then perhaps, although there are still plenty of things that go wrong with TD5, but there are a LOT of high mileage V8's - I overheated my D2, my fault entirely, at so it required head gaskets at 200,000k (I chose to do cam because I wanted even more grunt, but the stock cam was still in excellent condition). Likewise the block and liners. My D1 has nearly 280,000k and is still a very strong engine and not smokey. Both are LPG vehicles.

I dont know of anyone who has had to do cams and liners every 100,000 - thats way off the mark even on the most pessimistic view of V8's....

    Cheers

I've got what works out to be 217,000 km on my 2003. As far as I know the cam and lifters haven't been replaced. Now, they probably are worn, and if I have to go into it for head gaskets or oil pump, I'll probably do cam, lifters, and timing set, but for now I'm just going to drive it.

Michelle, I had just over 200,000 on mine when I replaced the engine and went 4.6. But I still was happy enough to use the original cam and lifters, partially because of budget, partially because I was in too much of a need to keep it running to research cams.

Lifters I believe can be had cheaply as they are the same as Holden from one of their engines. Cams are pretty cheap and apart from that only need a few gaskets, do the chain at the same time and a weekend.

Don't use Holden lifters. Although they do fit, they don't pick up the oil as well as LR lifters and can cause noisy lifters.

Sorry my post above was ambiguous - I am still running the same block, crank, liners, pistons and rings... All in great condition

    Cheers
