    Help! Another expansion tank cracked......

    Hi,

I thought I would ask you learned gentlemen for advice!

    I have a 2003 Disco 2. 4.0 V8. 190,000k's

The problem I have is I have had to fit a 3rd Expansion tank in 5 months due to hairline cracks appearing and it leaking.
We've done sniff tests on the coolant, fitted a new pressure cap and thermostat and still no idea what's causing it.

    Any explanations welcome.......unless it's a head gasket

    Cheers

    Mike

All the same brand expansion tank? Original or after market?

I guess it depends on how much the head gasket is leaking (if that's the problem), but if it's enough to crack the tank, have you tried looking for air bubbles in the expansion tank?

No ideas, but if it is from bad tanks, lets hope, you can get alloy replacements. Try allisport in the UK.

It's odd. The black d1 ones were prone to cracking but I'm not aware that the d2 ones were. Mine has done 200,000 since I bought the vehicle new and has survived a blown head gasket. Cheers

The d2 v8 tanks have a habit of the little nipple on the bottom of the tank breaking.

I would have thought that if its being pressurised the relief cap should function before cracking.

Thanks for the responses..........Yes the tanks is a Land Rover one. It had a Landrover sticker with the part number on it!!
I was the same that if the cooling system over pressured then the cap should release that pressure before any damage to any other parts. The guys at Ayres in Sydney said they've seen tanks that have blown up like a balloon in the past They seem to think it's faulty parts but this will be tank number 3! No1 was aftermarket. No2 was LR bought over from the UK and No.3 was LR but sourced through Ayres from whoever their supplier is. If there is a dodgy batch then they are spread far and wide!!
If there was a head gasket leak I assumed that the sniff test would show that up. The more tanks I get through the more I think that all it could be is a HG but after running hard and pulling over to check everything the cooling system pipes aren't rock hard which should be a sign of HG issue.

The last theory I had after trawling every corner of the net was that if there was a v. small leak in the HG then over time the coolant mixes with the exhaust gases and becomes acid which eventually fatigues the plastic and with the heating and cooling cycles causes the stress fracture in various places.

We're moving to Canberra in January and the Disco will have tank no.4 fitted tomorrow so if this problem reappears, which a have a sneaky suspicion it will, is there a recommendation for someone to use in the ACT to help get to the bottom of it?

    Cheers

Mike my 2003 Disco has just split its third tank in a year. Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

depends on how much pressure it takes to blow the tank. if the pressure is lower than the cap and that pressure is high enough to blow the tank then the weakest part goes first.
Just as a hole in a hose blows, under the pressure of the cap. The weakest link will go 1st.
My old D1 blew the tank before the cap released pressure.
Those Clear see through cheapie D1 replacements are also made of very thin plastic, but are still being sold. They blow easily, some times before the vehicle is even warmed up. Had a customer tell me on one he bought and it was leaking coolant from the seam as he was filling it, he didn't even get a chance to start it.
( The opaque ones are OK)
    Cheers, Mario
