    Quiet on Bitumen Tyres

    A tyre question with a difference! My main question relates to road noise - I like it quiet!

    I'm getting close to time to replace my Maxxis Maurader MA S1 that were on the car when I bought it and which have been excellent road and sand tyres. I'm a 90% bitumen, 10% sand/gravel user.

    I also generally carry a decent load (tools etc).

    I like what I hear about the Pirelli Scoprion as recommended by a good number on this site, but they no longer come in the size I want (265/75/16 = 31.65 inch).

    I also don't want a one directional tyre (will be buying 6 and want flexibility for changeovers and doing the big lap, including Kimberley gibbers etc).

    Other criteria include good sidewalls (LT?), but I'm not looking for a mud tyre.

    At the moment, without having properly checked if they meet my criteria, the short favourites are the new Bridgestone 697 (as recently fitted by Tombie) and the Maxis 700 series. Not interested in Coopers.

    Would appreciate any comments/suggestions.

    Because pirelli stopped making the Scorpion A/Ts in R16 i moved onto the scorpion ATR's in R16 after some comments from users on here and reading they were awarded 4WD trye of the year last year.

    while obviously not as aggressive tread wise, as I am also a 90/10 on road/off road user that was not such an issue.

    I drove on them from Syd to Bris on the black top then across the plenty highway to Alice, out to Palm springs (rocks and Mud) then home via oodnadatta track and thru the flinders ranges.

    no punctures and not a mark on them, performed flawlessly.

    Quiet on the bitumen, lotsa grip on the dirt sand and the LT model meets a fully loaded Disco's spec, strong sidewall construction while still being flexible over the rocky stuff.

    as good as the Scorpion A/T's i reckon. Super tyre.

    Michelin Latitude Cross are very quiet, and a pretty decent 65/35 tyre.
    Mine are passenger rated 235/70R16 106T and suffered a bit in the Northern Flinders Ranges, but otherwise have been fantastic. Pressured down they a great on sandy tracks.

    I'd buy again but would get the 245/70R16 111T next time as they are an Extra Load version, which I believe is the equivalent of a light truck rating. The 265/70R16 isn't XL rated so probably not much use to you.

    Just had a look. Yet to confirm they are not a single rotation fitting, but the ATR 275/70 (D = 31.16) might be the go - has 114T rating and just a wee bit lower than the 265/75 (D = 31.65)

    We just replaced our MickeyT ATR's (245/75/16) with Cooper HT's (245/70/16), road noise is very quiet especially after the ATR's, now i loaded the back of the car up with wood and the 2 boys and found the rear a little squidgey needed more air i think but the HT's are very good on grip in dry and specially the wet.
