Hey everyone first post just hoping for confirmation i think i know the answer please feel free to prove me wrong
so last month i changed my radiator had a coolant leak didn't think it was coming from the rad but i changed it anyway because it was old. didn't fix the problem(not coming from the usual spots either fuel cooler water pump)
anyway that's a completely different story.. sorry
while i was changing the radiator figured id do a belt change anyways the old belt was still fairly good did have a grove in the middle of it. so i put the new belt on and it wore a groove into it strait away.
I figured that was normal however after driving a little i noticed allot of rubber shavings stuck to the pipes that had come off the belt the belt after a month of driving is showing the material liner under the rubber..
the belt does squeak it was doing it before the change also so i'm thinking its the tensioner?
is it just the one tensioner i should change it does look like it moving around allot when the engine is running.
advice very much appreciated![]()

ok good to know thats most likely it (i hope)
think i should change the tensioner pulley and the pulley on the other side of the engine (water pump side) also?
thinking the tensioner one is the main culprit..
thanks again
Is it a td5? If so, very easy to miss-fit the belt by one groove, especially around the A/C pulley. Your mention of shavings, and the tensioner "moving around" more than usual make me think a malaligned belt should be ruled out.
On the V8, the ACE or P/S pump (can't remember) pulley if fitted back to fornt will cut a rib off the belt after producing masses of rubber. If you had it that far apart. An issue when the pulley isn't marked but is offset.
Hey So i just took a look at the drive belt and to me it looks straight as. i dont think its out of alignment and i change my mind about the tensioner too think its maybe ok. i notices the direction the rubber filings are coming from given the direction the belt runs must be coming from the fan pulley. and i noticed melted on rubber from the belt on the pulley does anyone know the reason for this (see picture.
above fan pulley melting the belt?
below the damage done to the belt.
any thought advice appreciated?
sorry could not see the belt
That groove in the belt likely be caused by seizing tensioner pulley
rubber melted onto the fan pulley suggests to me the pulley is partially seized (for whatever reason - bearing?) and the belt rubbing on the pulley causes the heat buildup & melting.
A knackered bearing here could also cause the excessive movement in the tensioner you mentioned.
Only the tensioner pulley has that groove in the middle on the belt flat side.
