Thread: D2 Battery Century/GS Yuasa CCA600 Vs CCA850

Hi I literally we t threw this the other day, all the Info I found said I needed a minimum of 850cca for my 01 v8, but I got a 1000cca from Nrma for $239 so I got that, cca or cold cranking amps is basically how powerful the battery is, I went the thousand as I figured its more powerful so it's less strain on the battery so it should last longer, now it's running beautiful, so I believe the battery you have now is far to small for your disco, hope this helps

Mine is a Td5 The battery was a Century N70ZZ4WD 21270 CCA 710 L 295(305) x W 160(172) x H205 (225 OA)
As listed on this site I changed it for a Caterpillar battery 115-2422 $224 from Hastings Deering it is working well

Many thanks for the input. It all makes sense with your replies and those that posted from the searches I came across, it would explain why it keeps dying... not enuf guts!!

I was quoted $270 (member price) for an RACV branded 850CCA battery w/ 3 yr warranty...

Battery World as an example provide 12 month warranty on their 850CCA Century battery and are slightly cheaper where as RACV are a smidge more expensive but offer a longer warranty.

Does anyone know whether RACV batteries are crap for putting it bluntly. I'm leaning more towards the RACV branded one only because of the warranty offered... any input appreciated...

@ disco2_dan, that's a good price from NRMA ... do they offer a standard 12 month warranty or a longer one though (out of curiosity)... and are they NRMA branded batteries?

RACV did have the 1000 on offer also, same price as the 850CCA w/ 2yr warranty however for my needs think it may be a bit overkill. I do lots of short trips, local shopping and occasional trips longer than 30k's one way with the only real consumption when we go away and hook in all the kids entertainment etc...

It came with 2 year warranty, and they came to my house and installed it, no such thing as over kill I think the 1000 would prob be better suited to your needs actually, I only had a 770cca in mine and now I got the bigger one everything seems to run smoother for some reason, Mabey cause its not struggling for power or something, cheers

A big endorsement for the same Caterpillar battery from me as well, fantastic item with so much grunt.

There is no such thing as overkill with batteries, not in a Discovery at least.

The main reason it will be dying is that batteries have a lifespan of around 5 years. Your battery is just old and tired. The CCA is a measure of how much power the battery can supply at -18°C without the voltage dropping below 7.2V.

My D2 Td5 had one of the RACV 1000CCA batteries in it when I bought it, but that died 10 months into my ownership. Judging by the manufacturing codes on the battery it was a bit over 5 years old when it was replaced. Because I'm running a dual battery setup I've switched to a more suitable battery for this purpose, but I doubt you'd have any problems with the RACV supplied unit.

Generally the longer the warranty the better quality the battery under normal conditions. A 3 year warranty battery is expected to last a minimum of 3 years by the manufacturer , or they wouldn't offer a 3 year warranty!

I'm not sure it's that simple. If you look at the supercharge batteries range for example the warranty is related to the intended usage. The 31 sized batteries which are a heavy duty truck battery have a 12 month warranty which reflects the fact they are likely to worked very hard. Smaller batteries of the same construction have 24 or 36 month warranty which again reflects intended usage rather than quality.
