Its a good question Adam,,
any ideas from our Northern American friends?
they must need/buy/use snorkles?
Not sure if anyone will be able to answer this one, but I know there are a lot of knowledgable people out there so you never know.
I have a D2 which had an engine upgrade to a 4.6 V8. I am now wondering if the Safari snorkel will allow enough air in. The snorkel does narrow down a lot and it was never designed for the larger engine.
I don't mind getting a custom snorkel fabricated but I do t want to do it if I don't have to.

There are lots of 03-04 discos with snorkels here, and I've never heard or read of anyone saying anything about problems. I don't have one yet.... I need other things like axle shafts and gears first.... But eventually I'd like to get one.
Not a Discovery, but a 4.2l Nissan TB42, turbo charged with a safari snorkel, no air supply problems. Now gone, unfortunately.
Hi Walker.....they'd be either Southdown or Mantec. I fitted a Mantec 6 month ago I obtained from a local LR parts supplier. People either love em or hate em, they're functional not beautiful but my previously asthmatic TD5 is now breathing freely![]()
Lack of airflow would only manifest itself at high load high revs as a v8 uses very little air when the throttle is closed or only partly open.

You could check by connecting an air pressure/vacuum gauge to the intake just before the MAF to see how many inches of water of vacuum is present vs atmosphere at high load.
A suitable gauge is a Minihelic or Magnahelic.
I must say that I recently opened up the end of my 92RRC barrel aircleaner to compare with the LRA snorkel which is a 3 inch pipe all the way, and the difference was noticable, however the intake noise coming up the snorkel was so annoying , I refitted the closed end.
My plan was to only use the snorkel in dust or river crossings and I obtained another barrel end to modify it. However I now have to work out a way to shut it up, although I did cover teh snorkel end with duct tape.
Maybe just pull the snorkel pipe off the aircleaner while it is not needed and compare, although the noise may trick you into thinking more power.

The guages would be good, but I'm not buying something like that. I think pulling the snorkel off is the best idea although I'm not sure why it would be noisier, it would just be back the way it was from the factory almost, pulling in air directly from the guard.
The snorkel down the A pillar is fine, it is just that it flattens out a lot as it runs down the outside of the bonnet before the elbow into the air cleaner.
Maybe a nice fat stainless snorkel would be cool anyway.![]()
A lot of guys run the Safari snorkel over here on 4.6l engines with no problems. I have the Mantec one though due to I wanted metal contruction instead of plastic due to our extreme cold which can get lower than -51C. Plastic can become very brittle and if I end up hitting a branch or something I was afraid I might crack it. I am not sure if your air box has the same oval exit out the side, but it would mate up nicely with the Safari snorkel.
Here is my mantec on a day it was -23C.
