Transmission oil temp gauge

I am not sure I would be mucking around with cheap stuff. I reckon that auto trans. temp is the 2nd most important thing to monitor behind water temp.

I started with cheap stuff ($50 guage) on the Rangie and they all were either inaccurate or died after a year or so. I ended up getting VDO gauges and never had a problem.

I will be getting a VDO temp guage for the disco ASAP. I don't think a couple of hundred dollars is too much when you consider the cost of the vehicle or another transmission. I will be putting a T piece into the cooler hose. You can get them from Pirtek with a thread that matches the sender.

Why not use a TM2 or TM4 for transmission. Sensor could be bolted to transmission case or cooler? Or clamped to pipe?

I would much rather monitor the actual oil temp rather than the external temp of the box.

I am liking the t piece before the cooler idea. I have also found an LCD that measure 4 temps and they also have EGT sensors.

What should the normal temp be and at what temp should I cool things down for a while?

Is it best to pull over and idle so the fluid keeps pumping through the cooler?

There was a post on this a few weeks ago. I think the concensus is don't go above 750 ish, but I would allow for the range to be a bit higher. I think I recall someone saying they got close to 1000 for a moment or two - dangerous?

I have also asked the seller of the original digi display about custom length leads for the sensors. It's only a few dollars more so might as well get it right or just a longer fixed length so you know you have enough.
