Dads D2 developed a knock in the engine.

    Hi gurus,

Need your thoughts on what this could be..... I know this is crystal ball gazing but your thoughts are appreciated.

While on a trip north of Adelaide, dads 2000 D2 TD5 developed a knock in the engine, according to dad it started off quiet but then got loud.

Dad did the right thing, and turned off the engine straight away.

The guy from the RAA, looked at it and advised that it could be a broken lifter or a broken piston.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    Matt

Unfortunately this is crystal ball gazing at it's best.
My thoughts are it could be in the harmonic balancer.
Usualy make a rattle and more noticable on start and shut down.

There is some videos in this area of UP's web site to show the area I'm talking of.
www.discovery2.co.uk / Crankshaft pulley* / TV damper replacement
Mine totaly let go to the point I could rock the fan and belt >30mm.
    Cheers, Kyle

Yep I understand that it is Crystal ball gazing at its best.

Dad just got back to Adelaide, and here is a little more information:

    1. There was no loss of power
    2. There was no loss of oil
    3. There was no smoke coming out of the exhaust.

My question now is, if it was a lifter or broken piston, wouldnt there be loss of power and smoke from the exhaust?

    Cheers again

Auto? Manual? Driveline related? Uni? Loose wheel?

Well we now have an answer from the mechanic.

number 4 bearing has let go.

It appears that at some stage prior to purchasing this vehicle, there was a problem with it, and the previous mechanic/owner did a dodgy.... seems that there was a problem once before, as when the mechanic pulled down the bearing casings, they were numbered with white out. Now number 4 bearing went through the casing, and it appears that number 3 bearing was about to go through the casing. It seems that someone previously replaced the casings, but the crankshaft and bearings were damaged.

We are now waiting on a cost to repair the motor.

Dad paid $15,000 privately for this vehicle, and to only have it 13 days and for this to happen, needless to say he is ****ed....

    Thanks everyone for their thoughts/comments.

    Cheers

Sounds like your old man paid a premium (@15k ).

And now some salt for those wounds. Did you check redbook before buying.

I would be taking the rig back to who it was purchased from and putting it on them to come to the party.

Best of luck for the repairs. Whoever you bought the car from sounds like a real vag.

    Regards
    Andrew
