My new/old side awning on my D2

Finally picked up a new second hand caravan awning to use off the side of my roofrack. Its 14ft long and although works as a whole I think I'll get it cut down and will be 3m long at the track and around 3 1/2m long on the outside. Not as fancy as the ARB etc ones but a lot more cover and only 50 bucks. I have a pole carrier to house poles so theyre covered and I have a toolbox for the roorack which could house both my side and rear canvas. So storing them isn't a problem.
Any thoughts good or bad welcome

Looks good Sharkee and should give you adequate protection from the elements.
However before you go modifying and cutting it, use it in various situations first.

If it was mine, i think I'd mount it at the rear to give protection while accessing your gear which appears to be in the rear of vehicle. You could also run a ridge pole out in line with the open rear door and peg 2 to 2.5m of the roof section to the ground. Three poles is all you'll need then - one on the ridge pole and one at each of the other two corners. Extra poles only needed if high winds or rain expected.

You could also consider some detachable walls which could easily be secured to the short 'skirts' that surround your roof.

    Something like this -

Thanks Xtreme my misses said leave the extra on too. I already have a good rear awning as well that's kind of wedge shaped but wow I like your rear one, that looks great. I never thought of trying that out on the back. I might give it a go and see how it looks/fits. I can always run my rear one of the side I guess.

Nice bit of lateral thinking there Sharkee it has a better cover and appears more securely attached to the rack than my el cheapo tarp solution shown here:

    El Cheapo Vehicle Awning

It's got me thinking about sewing a rope into the tarp and using some annex channel, instead of a tent ridge pole on the roof bars. Could do two at right angles to cover the tailgate and side for a bit more coverage.

Thanks guys, DM I thought I'd get a bite on that pic, Sorry only pic I have of it up. My fried puter before chrissy took a lot of pics with it.
Rok_Dr I do like yours you have it sits well with good shade and nice and taught. I had to make a new mount on my rack (is 3m) as I wanted the track longer and in doing so had to brace it with some steel 6mm thick flat because out the front it sits in the air not mounted. Rope track on an awning, yeah you cant beat it its quick, strong and easy.
Disco2 Dan you cant always get van awnings cheap but they do come up reasonably often, my rear one isn't an old van one though it was custom made for the back of a 4by for my brother in law and I bought off him but caravan awnings, make great shades of the roofrack.
Personally yeah I'd love an ARB or similar one but just cant justify the bucks and these although bit bulky to store are a better cover IMO and will last longer I think.

    Cheers Steve

Good point Sharkee, Annex channel will need some solid bracing. More food for thought.

Steve if you mount it along a solid bar then it should be fine but mine comes out a fair way past the front of the rack hence having to reinforce it.
