    Blown hose cause

Hi all, my 2003 TD5 lost power and the temp rose to red. Blew coolant from the upper hose, and looked, no bleeder valve. What would have caused this?

lots of other things can preceed a blown head gasket.

    failed bung threads.
    blocked radiator
    failed VC
    Failed water pump
    Failed Thermostat

    Hello,
Same thing happen to mine I though head gasket as well, but close inspection of hose saw it the plastic nut inside was broken away from the rubber hose new hose no problems been nearly a year now. Make sure you clean the ends of the pipes very well as mine didn't seal the first time slight leakage. Since then change all the hoses in the engine bay.
In saying that mine did not go in to the red, just heard the electric fans going when switched the engine off, so had a look, no steam still a bit of water coming out lucky I guess.

Hi, I have just gone through 9 months of pure hell with my TD5 Classic, well known Dealer (who's Company name sounds like the name of a card game)...diagnosed head gasket after a blown top hose, with a lot of oil in the coolant....and hardly any left in the sump....over $5K later, recon head, new gasket, etc etc...got it home and it dumped a heap of fresh oil into the coolant again, no blown hose. At no time was there any water in the oil...

Took it back, they told me that it was "residual oil" from the last issue...filled it up with coolant, and it did exactly the same thing again..

For the 3rd time they took it away on a tilt tray, to discover that the water cooled engine oil cooler "might be the cause"...and fixed that, but only after I suggested it to them. Thing went for about a month, then blew another top hose. Diagnosis was radiator...another $800 bucks and within 3 days was leaking from the top hose again. On top of that, the waste-gate solenoid crapped itself and had to be fixed. Got it home, 2 days later the top hose blew....diagnosis was a faulty top hose. Fixed that under manufacturers warranty, and it has been running for a week!...but my gut feeling is that there is still an issue...too scared to drive it too far now.

The dealer eventually looked after me, but not until I got cranky and threatened action, and then lent me a procession of Freelander 2's that I really enjoyed driving...wow..LR have come a long way in 8 years...they go like stink! But I still wanted my Disco back...weird ain't it?

Moral of the story?....with symptoms like yours, it might not always be a head gasket...have a dig around, it could be something simple, or something stupid, but never what you expect....which is why we love our Land Rovers so much...

as a PS to my story above, at no time in any of the coolant loss proceedings did the temp gauge waver from the mandatory middle of the road reading......as I noticed on another thread about the same problem...

Car is nearly 10yrs old and plastic in a hot environment gets brittle. Plus there is very little thread to play with. So being plastic it doesn't much for someone to overtighten and strip the plastic threads in the hose.
So I would replace the top hose and inspect the rest. And hope that it hasn't cooked anything else it shouldn't have when it lost all the coolant.

    Re; blown top hose

    Hi, has anyone checked:
    (a) the expansion tank cap pressure relief valve
    (b) the overflow passage and tubing is clear

    Good luck

I would say that if the original contributing factor was not the headgasket, it may well be now.
As we all know they do not like being overheated, and once into the red and hot enough to loose power they more often than not need the head pulling.
Hopefully it is not in your case, and it is something a lot simpler/cheaper.
