Conundrum...which D2?

I applaud your loyalty to "the rattler", but soon you will be old enough to own a V8. I have the feeling you will not be able to help yourself. Just think, the effortless acceleration, the instant torque from idle, the grumble when you put your foot down in anger, and of course the I don't care attitude (about fuel consumption) that you will adopt. You will see the envy in someone elses eyes (maybe your girlfriends) when you say those magic words - its a V8. Then you will realise that nothing else really matters.:)

Have found one and had it inspected by a landrover service centre. It's a 2003 Series 2a with 114,000 kms on it. Couple of quick questions just to ease my nerves before i pull the trigger.

- Inspection report states that the rocket cover is leaking oil - from what i can find and from the chat with the mechanic its a pretty common problem. Mech said it was fairly minor compared to some that he has seen - mentioned a waterfall....
- the Valley gasket is also leaking

_ Are these massive jobs to fix ($ wise) and will i have to get them done for a RWC in VIC?

It has a few other little things (globes and a fuse) that need sorting also.

I had Valley seals and rocker cover gaskets replaced on my D2a V8 before I sold it. Was $700 for the lot from memory. There is a few hours labour involved as all the intake and injection has to come off and I think the exhaust manifolds were removed as well as I know at least one broken bolt was replaced.
Not sure about VIC but I know in QLD I had to get them done to pass a roadworthy.

Rocker cover gaskets on a V8 is about $100 in parts and 1 days works (10- 12 hours). There is a good tutorial on how to do this. Easy job. No special tools required. I would be surprised if a mechanic could do it in under 5-6 hours. That would be good moving.

Not sure about the valley gasket.

For a mechnic to do them they would be classified as a big job with reference to your wallet. ($700 I would consider a very good price).

I would also think you would need it completed for a roadworthy.

Is the car being sold without a roadworthy? Interesting if so.

I'm buying it from NSW (im in VIC) , so I'd need to get the RWC done in VIC. I guess i could ask them to provide one but not sure if they factored that in the price.

It was done at the same time as quite a bit of other work involving a fair bit of swap over between two vehicles.
British offRoad did all the work for me and I have always felt that Andrew and his service crew do an excellent job and the price has always been the best around.

I would think both states would have similar requirements. Generally oil leaks are a no go. Do are ring around inquiring about RWC.

Victorians appear to be push overs with regards to RWC (looks practical though). Looks likes the gaskets can leak, just not drip.

As I said, $700 is a very good price, I would revise that to excellent if there were snapped bolts in the manifold. Their labour rate must be cheap. If you are a gun mechanic and all the planets were aligned, knocking it over in 6 hours is a good effort.

From the report i got, the gasket leaks are leaking over the drivetrain and the rear diff is leaking too.

Have asked the seller about it - wait and see what they come back with.
