ATF or Power Steering Fluid Escaping?

Got home tonight from a reasonably long day trip to find a pool of red oil/fluid has been escaping into the engine bay.

I initially thought it might have been power steering after seeing the fluid spurt around in the semi clear what I'm assuming is the power steering reservoir.

But I suspect it might be ATF (possibly from the newish front mounted ATF cooler pipes) as at the end of the trip the AFT heated up from 65/70 to 75 and the gear changes were just starting to hesitate on takeoff.

Next step is to check the ATF level - when I work out how to do it, assuming I don't have a dipstick. After all the work I've had done in the last 6 months, I was hhoping I should not have had to worry about ATF etc for at least 20K km.

I can't get to the engine bay for 24 hours, but would be interested in any initial comments/suggestions. Cheers Gavin

PS reservoir in on passengers side inner guard. If there's two caps then you have ACE as well (just another consideration).

The original connectors for the coolers (both engine and auto) are about as useful as a diet crouton. Having said that if they come off (there's no real in between stage) you'll really know and so will the driveway. Did you fit new (original) hoses or a replacement (aftermarket) cooler?

There's a suction hose for the PS pump which goes from the reservoir to the underside of the pump. This is a different size at each end and depending on who you ask is, or isn't available or is but costs a fortune. Can be made up from straight pieces of hose from Pirtek etc and some brass fittings to both reduce the size and make the bends at the same time. It could be this hose leaking as they are quite well hidden and run under and around all sorts of rubbing points.

Thanks clubagreenie - quite a few tips for me to follow.

No ACE so a single cap, and when my "additional" trans cooler specifically for towing was professionally fitted by the local gurus in front of the new OEM radiator they said they did the proper exercise on all ATF connections with the comment "you won't have these coming off like lots of LRs" - so I hope they are right!!

PS reservoir seems to be full - will double check next inspection after its settled down, but was surprised to see the spurting/swirling within the reservoir while the engine was running - is this normal? and (which also suggests towards an ATF issue, but!!). Cheers
