Just to reiterate, I service heaps of these and not one of them has 'no' oil consumption. All seem to go through up to a litre per 5K, which is the norm I have noticed for the last 10 or 12 years of playing with these....D1 and D2 seem to be on par.
A few I have seen have no registerable oil on the stick come service time, this also is quite common. I used Valvoline 15w40 for years , and now either Shell Helix or Penrite. (All my oils are diesel rated too).
In the USA, the D2 had heaps of valve and Cat converter issues etc from oil consumption and high running temps etc.

Thanks JC, I feel more at rest about the engine now, after having a wrx for years and years And never having to check the oil or anything for that mater I was a little worried about the motor being about 2L low on oil after 10,000km, what alerted me to this was a loud ticking noise on cold start and going around long corners lol so since it was nearly time for a service any way I did one and realised how low it was on oil!!! That's the reason for this post, just wanted to say thanks again JC your words on land rovers are almost holy :) oh glad to hear I chose the right oil too!!! It said in the book to run 10/40 but I thought with getting on in age and km that 15/40 was the way to go :) thanks everyone who has posted it's been a great help :)

They burn a bit and presumably suck some past the valve guides. They also leak a little....but Jeez the oil stays nice and clear when you are topping it up! Actually mine stays like new cause i run LPG, but certainly adding a litre or two between services topping up helps.
Cheers

Im using about 4litres every 2 weeks, but im very confident that i have stuffed rings in at least 2 cylinders. I'm using the penrite old worn engine oil at the moment because its really thick and i'm burning less. I'm a week or so away from a rebuild so opefully that will be the end of my oil experience.
I used to use a small amount per service. Look after your cooling system, getting them hot stuffs them.
