    Engine oil disappearing

    Hello,

I checked the oil yesterday, it was just below the low mark. I topped it up about an hour before a country drive to Denilliquin.
Got to Denni, had a good night, moved the Disco this morning and thought to check the oil level before driving off. Lo and behold the oil level is below the low mark again. The motor is a Td5.

I checked the engine for leaks.......None(well nothing more than a few drips, not a major leak)

I checked the cooling system for oil.......Nothing

I looked under the car for oil leaks........Nothing more the a couple of drips, all dry underneath.

I checked the back of the car for oil spray across the door an rear windscreen.........Nothing

The head was off a while back(about 2 years), all seals and washers were done while it was off by a Land Rover specialist.

Where is the oil disappearing to????

    Cheers,

    Jason

    What engine is it?

    Probably being burnt

Excessive blowby?, oil in the IC hoses?, sticking PCV valve?

This is very unusual for a Td5 Jason, I would immediately check the turbocharger for excessive play...

How many K's was the drive? Was it the longest drive you had done for a while? If so could be a build up on unburnt fuel and contaminants in the oil which only burn off after a long run.

If so then good you topped up before you left?,,

Deniliquin is about 4 hours and 350kms from Hampton Park... So the engine would have had plenty of time to burn out/off any crud in the oil if it was there.

Thats a good run to burn off a build up of fuel in the oil. Question is? Has the oil level dropped since? If not this is most likely the cause and very common.

Happened to a few of my cars over the years. Heavy stop start short commute runs for a few months. Then a holiday run to find the oil has dropped low at the end of the first long journey. Topped it back up and never moved again until next service!

Regardless of the climate/season it actually takes about 20k of driving for the oil to reach the right temp and viscosity to lubricate and evaporate fuel. I use 5w40 to give me the widest range as when I use my V8 disco it don't go very far in the week.

Road trip time i keep a 1 Litre bottle in the back in case. Its been there 8 months! :-) Unlike my friends Audi Q7 which gets topped up fortnightly!

I think you could right. The oil level has remained constant since.

    Cheers,

No worries. I had the same thing with a SAAB 9-3 and Mercedes C180K. I fully suspect my D2 will do it again as it's not done more than 10k in one hit for months!
