I left mine off for a year or two, without any problems, as the captive nut under the fuel cooler was no good. It does make a difference with noise. It may also have the slightest effect on temperature (higher).

Hi all, is this cover something that HAS to be there?.....I have been monitoring an oil leak for the last week or so with it off and it doesn't seem to make any difference to the amount of noise emanating from the engine bay. Not going to cause any heat/insulating issues? How many others have taken it off and left it in a dark corner of the shed?

It does have a marginal effect on the noise level, but I don't have mine on anymore as the bloody oil filler lid rattled and gave me the ****s.

Mine's been off for a few months and have noticed no difference with noise inside the cabin, outside ... who cares!
I'm sure it must make a marginal difference to the engine temp.
... but what about the extra heat to the bonnet?
For a car manufactured in England, for Australian conditions I liken it to wearing a beanie in summer.
Mines been off for a couple of years.
Mine has been off for years. No problems. Same for the turbo heat shield. Sick of that rattling.

Its excellent for trapping oil dust and becoming a fire risk.
Other than that, if its still clean enough its good to lean on and to rest your head on if you have to work under the vehicle on rough ground.

I threw mine down the tip 6 months ago after tripping over it in the shed one too many times.
while your at it get rid of the turbo heat shield, you be surprised how easy it is to change your oil filter now that you can actually get at it from both sides.
The engine definitely seems cooler without those two pieces of junk.
plus being able to SEE the engine is a huge bonus, you will be more conscious about keeping it clean , and will be able to see any leaks before they become a problem.
I always leave mine off.
I had a TD5 and mice started nesting under the nice cosy cover in winter.
They did the the same in my RRS which also had a cover (now removed)
Never had a problem with mice until the introductiopn of the cover. Now Ive removed the cover mice are no longer a problem.
A mouse nest is a real fire hazard
