Thread: HELP! Traction control and downhill assist lights coming on randomly???

The three lights are a common D2 issue, known as the three amigos.
Do a search on here, check out the good oil, as there are hundreds of posts on this issue
Trailer light coming on means the lights in your indicators are over 5w, which triggers the lights
Replace them with leds or 5w globes

I got quoted $1000 to fix the problem by the local LR guy as he said I needed a new computer or something along those lines (the mrs took the car in while I was at work) does this sound right or ridiculous???

The official fix would be at least $1000 to replace the valve assembly on the modulator. There is another fix that people do to their own vehicles that bypasses the questionable wiring from the shuttle valve switch to the valve assembly, probably less than $100 to do yourself.

That's assuming that the codes you are getting are for the shuttle valve switch electrical fault. If it's something else like a wheel sensor or two, you could ALSO easily get to $1000 replacing hub assemblies.

Also, take it to an auto electrician with a OBDII scangauge (plugs in under steering column) to get the fault codes read and re-set. Sometime re-setting will last a year or two (has done with me twice) and probably cost $50. At least then you'll KNOW !

Re the indicators: if you have a bull bar with indicator lights this places an extra load on this circuit which the Disco system decides means a trailer is attached so is doing its normal thing and letting you know the trailer lights are working, should be able to get around this by using led globes in b/bar, if that is the issue.....good luck.

The 'option b' mod that people talk about should be done only if faults point to that prob. Look up on aulro about 3 amigos symptoms and remedies. Posted orig by me, but added to by others. Could be as simple as loose wire in connector, oil at ecu (becoming more common source of 3 amigoes, according to some workshops) and progressively more difficult to remedy.

option b will only fix if a wire has come undone in the resin block inside the mqdulator so option b bypasses that connection externally so if the fault is related to a sensor or shuttle valve sticking or even worn brake pads option b is unnecessarily butchering the modulator which has nothing to with these other faults. my first fault was every time i turned the steering wheel to a reasonable lock the amigos came on and a nanacom detected a broken sensor wire on front left wheel soldered wire cleared fault and all was good.next time the lights appeared nanacome showed a shuttle vale fault so removed valve unit by lifting the modulator and undoing the three allen screws underneath popped out the plastic shuttle valve unit and and one of the valves was stuck which with a good press released with a click i had a new valve body and kept the old as a spare the job took only 30mins no need to undo all the brake lines unless you are looking for work cleared fault again all good.then the last time lights came on when hard braking and found rear pads worn replaced all good again and easy fixes nothing wrong with landies we all become good mechanics and can save heaps.
