Fuel consumption.....![]()
So, I tried the search function and couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. I've found a D2 V8 for a good price, but I know not much about the Discoverys. If I was going to look at one, what are the standard faults, things to avoid, things to be looking for to make sure I'm not getting taken for a ride?
Thanks, Ben.

Service history, and service history.
3 amigos...can be an issue but not necessarily too dificult to fix...have a read of some recent posts or do a search to see what it means.
Fuel consumption can be a bitch but the purchase price should reflect that, relative to a similar model diseasal.
Oil leaks...it's a Landy...no leaks and you' probably want to know why!
Good luck.![]()
Had the same dilemma but never asked... Haha
Found a well maintained '01 Disco. only 118k's on the clock and talked them down on price. It was all win.
It was my (our) first 4x4 so didn't know what to look for, and didn't look for... well... anything.
So far, so good! replaced the battery, put on some sidesteps and have an xrox on it's way.
Win win!
Have a good look inside the engine bay and make sure the V8 is a Td5 ... if you're unsure, it usually says "Td5" on the back. If it says V8 ... it's NOT a Td5 ... best to stay clear.
Sorry 😜 ... couldn't resist.
Cheers guys. Yeah I've heard about the "Three Amigos" trouble before. Fortunately I scored a deal on a a pocket OBD II scan tool that clears codes (worked on a mates car last night). Figured service history is generally a big one. Yeah I'll definitely keep in mind the coolant use. Don't want a project car!
It's gotta be a d2a ...v8 the sound is worth it alone. Daily driver not really, although it is,and you cannot beat the drive. Are they any worse service cost wise to a TD5 dunno, if you are like me and its not twice round oz before next march, but rather a well planned excursion, you cannot go past one.
Cheaper to buy, fuel is roundabout ,and you do go further in an oil burner, but mine is good enough!![]()

just went through the same thing. i ended up with a 2001 V8, brought it off a landrover nutter, he loved the car, took a pic of me driving out the drive way....lets hope that was for sentimental purposes not celebratory.
things i looked for, got one checked out in Sydney, had rocket cover gasket leaks and valley gasket leaks, quotes to fix (im not super handy yet) were about 700~950.
ended up going with a different one, minor, minor rocket cover gasket leak and reciepts for everything service history. Had it just over a week, pretty happy so far, great value for money and fuel is ok IMO.
Look forward to seeing how you go.
Hi,
My first quesion would be service history as mentioned above, but then the over riding thing for me would be Coolant usage.
If it is using Coolant then there is an issue from minor to the usual, radiator or the dreaded Head Gasket.Plenty of broken hearts there!
I have a V8 and yes it's thirsty but boy what a car to drive. I'm no mechanic, but have learnt over the last 18 months and most things are "fixable" which on a diesel I could not do.
Cheers , Jerry
