could the metal you have seen be the 'cup washers'? when i had my t/c retrofitted with cdl they mentioned these brass washers break up due in part to not running a cdl when offroad, they then replaced mine.
just a thought and cheaper than 350 pound.

Judging by the metal in the TC oil at the last change, and ominous noises that seem to be emanating from the same area I'm looking into options for replacing the centre diff on the basis that is 99% likely to be cactus.
While checking the rebuild kits on the Ashcroft website I noticed they now offer a ATB Centre Diff to suit the LT230T transfer case - and from what I can determine the LT230SE in the D2 is a T series case.
At £350 it's a pretty good option compared with a replacement factory CD which would be at least £700 (Rimmer Bros clearance sale pricing) . The ATB is also apparently far stronger than the stock centre diff.
The really nice thing about the ATB CDL is that it can be locked as normal for difficult conditions but will function as a torque biasing diff when unlocked. Based on the excellent reviews of the behaviour of the ATB diffs with ETC the ATB centre diff should theoretically work really well on the D2.
Hmmmm, a full ATB drive train. Could be very interesting.

Fitting of a Quaife ATB centre diff plus mention by Dave Ashcroft that they've just added their own ATB centre diff to their range in this thread LT230 diff damage
I specifically asked this question at pirate: Quaife Differential - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum
And it appears that this is correct... unless Ian Ashcroft misunderstood what I was asking.
