Question Extending the diff and transmission breathers

Has anyone extended their differential and/or transmission breather tubes? If so, where did you put them? Up the A-pillar? Inside your air intake snorkel? Did you fit a filter on the end? Pictures please!

On my old D1 I ran all 4 breathers into the engine bay and mounted them on the firewall

Topped them off with brass silencers from a pneumatics supplier

Most parts were from the scrap bin

On the D2 they already run up to the top of the firewall from factory.

That's why I haven't bothered doing it again

Yes you will have more than wet diffs and transmission to worry about if they go under. I noticed my axle and trans ones today as I was fitting an ARB battery cradle.

The axle runs along the top of the firewall to about the middle and the trans ends in a U above the engine.

I have the early D2, 1999, & the rear diff/ axle breather comes out of the left hand side of the axle casing, up in front of the rear left shockie, up to the under floor level, & then bends over into an inverted ' u ' shape. Been meaning to bring it thru to the firewall for ages. have a look at www.discovery2.co.uk , off road addons, wading breathers. There is a wealth of info on this site, [ donations to the site are appreciated] Bob

Get some similar sized tube from a hyd/pneumatic supplier. Pirtek has it plus a small alloy manifold and platic fittings to merge the tubes into one then run a single outlet into a bulkhead fitting into the snorkel and up.

If you need some tube let me know as I ended up with eleventy billion feet after buying an offcut length. I ran the rear out of the outlet, under the spring perch (softer tube was more flexy for bends) and up the radius arm as std then cable tie to the lines on top of the LH chassis rail & up the firewall.

On the later ones the rear diff breather runs up behing the n/s rear light, the other 3 run up to the engine bay as already mentioned

Obviously the earlier ones are different, and similar to the D1

I like that idea more than taking it to the firewall, cheers, Bob
