Thread: Td5 D2 down on power and excessive fuel consumption

    Hi all,
    I am having problems with my 2000 td5 auto discovery. I bought the car a couple of months ago with 134,000kms on the clock. Since then I have noticed that it seems sluggish and uses more fuel (500kms to a tank) compared to other discos of the same spec I have driven in the past. So far I have changed the MAF twice!, cleaned the MAP and AAT, replaced the wastegate modulator done my injector washers and seals, changed all of the filters, new FPR, installed an EGR removal kit and still no better. I then took it to have a scan, which resulted in the second MAF due to the first one not being genuine and not up to the task, while it was there I was told the 265/75/16s I was running were the cause and that getting a performance chip would get the power back and improve fuel consumption so I had that installed also. The chip definitely makes the car faster and improved the fuel slightly and I now get 550ks to a tank but the car still feels slower than all the others I've driven. Just out of curiosity I have put the standard tires back on and run it around for a couple of days only noticing a slight decrease in fuel consumption( possibly down to inaccuracy at the bowser). I have also noticed that when accelerating lightly it feels as though the engine is out of balance and shaky at around 2000-2500RPM.

    Checked for Oil in the red plug at the ECU from the injector harness?

    I have had a look a few weeks ago and didn't see any. The harness has been changed before according to some receipts that came with the car. When the chip was installed I had an exchange ECU put in as part of the upgrade so I am hoping that would not be the problem or I would have at least been told of such a problem.

    The increase in tyre size puts your speedo 9.3% slow, which would account for almost 10% extra fuel usage that you haven't used

    Unfortunately the Km's I have quoted are including the calculations for the increase in tire circumference. The most I have ever see the odometer read is 510km, which is from overflowing to fuel light. Then when I do the calcs it's not much more than 560kms. The thing is the gauge is dropping just as fast with the standard tires on too.

    I worked out it is using about 13.4L/100 with the big tires and 13L/100 with the standard tires. And that's taking it easy

    Most ECU upgrades of early MSB type units have a slight surge issue at the RPMs you describe. Later flashable NNN units don't seem to suffer this.
    Fuel consumption is definitely poor.
    I haven't seen air filter replaced on your list?
    Lots of other possibilities like Auto trans slipping Torque converter not locking up, hand brake dragging, exhaust restriction, viscous fan seized.

    Get the auto serviced and flushed properly, check that you don't have a leaking manifold gasket, check the flexible pipe after the turbo, if it looks like it is too flexible or it has soot on it have it replaced and while your doing that, take out your centre muffler for better flow.

    Get a Nanocom diagnostic tool as well.

    I wasn't aware of the ecu problems you have mentioned. I have changed the air filter twice aswell on advise that the first one I had done was separating and was no good. I was also told that it is locking up properly when the chip was done. I unbolted the exhaust before the first muffler to check for blocked mufflers and it went worse than with it on. The handbrake drum does get warm but not hot enough for it to be dragging I don't think, I'm assuming its just getting warn through transfer of heat but I may be wrong.
    Ill check the fan this arvo.

    Is the wastegate length adjusted properly to the ecu upgrade you have changed?
