    TD5 with over 300000 Klms ?

    Hi
My brother is looking at getting a Disco and has come across this one

2004 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY - AUTOMATIC | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Ballarat City - Delacombe

    Does anybody know this vehicle?
What is the considered opinion on the Klms being so high?
Anything particular to look for, overheating/head gasket issues etc?

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers

Pay someone who knows there discos to have a look at it mate!! Could be a massive money saver in the long run( or short). You don't want to get stung with these cars.

    "These are usually $20K"

Yes, without 300,000 on the clock.

    I feel it's 3 grand too high.

For the last of the TD5 D2's it is cheap. I was worried about buying my 99 model with 275k on clock, but it doesn't drive like its done a lot of work. Id be more suspicious as to how it presents in person, if a dealer can make more money on it they will.

my disco had done 351,000 an a pulled it down for a refresh and found everything to be worn to it maximum (when i measured bores etc) i would be wary if it were me but my vehicle was running fine before so you never know.

Given it's age and what it is, I wouldn't discount it. But if it's history can't be traced I'd walk.

i recently purchased mine at 300.000 kms old and its not missed a beat yet. Has been well maintained with service history. So if has good maintenance/service history record I would not be put off by it.

Not really a question that can be answered online without actually seeing the vehicle.

Personally, for me high kilometers are not a barrier. I find that age of a vehicle can cause as much issues as kms anyways (plastic and rubber parts generally perish due to age and sun more than the kms).

Really it depends on the type of kms that the vehicle has done, and in older vehicles, it's usually the interior condition that helps to show this:

A city vehicle which does a lot of stop start, short distance stuff usually shows the interior being worn, often the steering wheel is worn, the drivers seat padding is compressed, seat belt is frayed from on off all the time. This is generally not great kms as it's hard on the vehicle - lots of gear changes, and runs can be short so the vehicle isn't operating at ideal temperature.

An off road bush basher usually shows through the mud and dust in the cracks of the interior. Even after a good clean, it's hard to get it all out without removing parts to clean out the cracks and that. Again this is quiet hard kms due to the terrain being traveled on.

The ideal vehicle would be a one that has done long highway kms, generally country vehicles. The vehicle is running at operating temperature, generally it's just staying in high gear, not much braking etc.

I'd be worried about the TD5 motor if people aren't getting more than 300,000km from them.

It also comes down to maintenance. Personally, I religiously service my vehicles, and I also follow the more extreme maintenance schedules which involves more frequent oil changes (e.g. my Falcon V8's service interval is 15,000km, but I drop the oil every 7,500km and it comes out still a golden brown colour rather than black).
I was speaking to a bloke the other day who replaces his vehicle with a brand new one roughly every three years. He doesn't service them. His current ute is at around 40,000km since brand new, never been serviced (why, I do not know, as it must surely effect his warranty). I'd rather buy a vehicle with three times the kms that has been properly looked after than his low km one...

Generally the automatic transmissions fail at around 200,000km (I haven't even looked if it's automatic), so it's likely that it's got a replacement or reconditioned automatic transmission in it (check this) - if it has, it's a good thing, hopefully means another 100,000km of trouble free gear changes!

Another factor is, if you can mechanically fix it yourself if you do have some issues.

Regarding the price, $11,499 is the asking price. Most sellers are negotiable to reduce it. I'd be having a good look at it.

And it has the bullbar and side steps which would save you around $2,000.00 versus buying them new...

I'd agree with twr7x you would really have to look at it in person and see what the documented service history is like.

That said the location, fitted accessories and Kms are suggestive of a country car, so it could have a bit of life left in it.

Given the price if it was in Perth I'd be tempted to grab it as a spares car subject to a wee bit of haggling of course

    Cheers

    Steve

350k kms I'd venture as being a bit premature for a Td5 to be so worn.
Autos usually fail between 200-250, thankfully mine is still going strong. If it's an auto it's unlikely to have made it that far, so potentially new autobox. Manual boxes are a bit more durable but around 300k it's "start looking at your options" time. Head will most likely have come off, but like has been said before.
300k certainly shouldn't stop you having a look at it, that costs nothing.
