    Broke my Disco :(

Well folks have broken my disco it was 100% fine, moving horsefloat around today. all good. SInce yesterday putting my pano engine in the pano ive not been able to drive, so mum was driving my disco to take me to see my weanling horse. We pull over just down the road at the bins. Turn it off. Go to turn it back on and wont start. I think mums just not turning key properly or something so have a go and nope, ignition is fine. But wont turn over. fuel pump is on. Then i look at trans as its like it thinks its in drive still, and discover that for some reason, i can cycle through all gears while its not on! no foot on brake!! its supposed to stay in park! then check all trans fuses, all fine. Then I notice dash when all lights go out, S and M are flashing. Refer to book, Auto transmission fault.
I changed trans fluid the other week. Been fine since until now. I did not change the trans filter so think if fluid is low, i will just drain, take sump off and replace the filter in there. Will try disconnect battery and reconnect, even see if have a multimeter somewhere eto check if battery is on way out. then think camshaft sensor which i think is roughly where ive got an oil leak, will see if its mucky and clean it. Think a linkage or something is on the trans so will check that.
Have i missed anything else it could be to check? I would go look today but im seriously broken at the moment so cant do a lot. so resting so can check tomorrow. So sad it broke down it never breaks down least it didnt get far from home so was easy to get it rope towed by a friend haha.
love my disco LOL. already miss driving it and its not even been a day, but not knowing how long it will be not drivable makes me very sad

didnt you say that you were moving a horse float around and stuff...

did you have all lights on when you turned the key was there any clicking? whas it turning over but not firing?

probably could do with a bit more info..

many of us have had issues with starting myself included...the issues I had was the starter itself....but many have had issues with the start solinoid.

for me it started once the car got hot it wouldnt start again if I turned it off..but it then randomly started to not start with the turn of the key when down at the shops on a short run where it never got hot..but I could not recreate it one day it would do it then it woould be fine for a few days....

checking your battery first would be a good start....and like I said more detail so the members can help you diagnose..

when I first got my issues we thought it might have been the inhibitor switch thingy on the gear box that detects when your in Park because obviously as im sure you and your mum are aware the car with not start if its in gear.

In saying that I have only just realised that your in a D2 not a D1...I could of swore I saw you in a photo with a D1 so just assumed...the things I have talked about above is in regards to a D1 not a D2
so most of which is possibly not relevant....

still someone will be along to help you just give as much detail about what the car does etc so they can help you a bit easier

LOL yeah mines a D2 Everything is as normal when it starts anyways, ignition functions normal, glow plug light goes out as to the other lights that light up then go off, then the S and M ones light back up and flash. There is no cranking, fuel pump is buzzing as normal. Just no life it does not even try to start. There is no cranking, no nothing. It is like it is in Drive and I am trying to start it, other than it is in park, and Park is functioning as normal, as in holds the car as normal. It is all normal until i try to start lol.
I have towed my flaot last 2 days in a row, and then moved it around today before un hitching it. Towed and drove as normal. No issues with trans. Never had any issues at all starting or driving until now. other week towed my sisters broken down freelander on a trailer home no worries at all. Towed my float a fair few times no worries at all.
so now both landies here are broken down though my sisters freelander now starts for what ever reason, it just has a misfire between 2000 and 3000 rpm for some reason.
Well my dad does not have a multimeter so cant check my battery for voltage on

a multimeter wont prove the battery is good or bad.
can be 12.6volts and still be bad

You get this with a faulty starter solenoid. I tried three things at once so can't say which fixed: pull the small push on connector off the starter solenoid clean and refit; check the earth connector on the battery, remove and clean, reconnect to battery; give the starter solenoid a tap with a spanner.

The symptoms I had were no click from starter solenoid and no starter action, dash lights dimming then m&s lights.

    Cheers
    Paul
