Yes, mine was eaten out by a leaking power steering pump. The rubber had gone soft and disintegrated

Do you know if the leak came from the O ring gasket beneath the pump on the low pressure side? Just replaced that O ring, but has been leaking for a while. The reason I asked that question, I have seen photos on here at times that show caked on oil etc at the front of the engine when discussing other issues. Good enough reason to fix those leaks, & keep it clean, I guess. Bob
