kids seats in the 3rd row

    Hi,
We took our 7 seater Disco to Kids Safe to get the kid's seats checked and they said not to connect the kid's seats to the luggage anchor points as they are not rated for a crash.

Does anybody have any tips where/how to fix the kids seat anchor points so we can put the kids seats back in the 3rd row?

We can not ignore the Kids Safe advise as we need their certification for my wife to start taking other children as a family day carer.

I found something that looks like an anchor point underneath a plastic cover in centre ceiling just inside the tail door. It probably couldn't be used for the 3rd row seats though since it's in the middle? It might be for anchoring a child seat in the middle of 2nd row.

Not many vehicles have child restraint points for the 3rd row. You can get an engineer to install points on the floor at the back if you need them.

You can buy anchor points from BigW, Target and Kmart. I installed an anchor point into a 2-seater Suzuki Carry van so that my son could ride with me in the van. The police pulled us over once to check out his restraint and they had no problems with it. I just drilled a hole in the tray floor behind the seat and attached the anchor point with the included nut and bolt. You should be able to do the same somewhere in the Disco. Floor or ceiling.

EDIT: I found an identical one on Super Cheap Auto's website: Mother's Choice Child Restraint - Vehicle Anchor Kit - Supercheap Auto Australia

OK, I think I get it.

The large washer goes under the floor to distribute the forces in a crash.

It that all there is to it?

If so I could probably use the existing luggage tie-down holes.

I think the anchor point should be directly behind the seat, not slightly to the side like the luggage point would be. But don't quote me on this. Ask the people at Kids Safe.

Maybe you could even use the tail door to attach the anchor points. Plenty of good metal to attach to there.

I don't think you are just meant to just drill a hole and mount. That type is for where the car manufacturer has a threaded insert already installed, often on the parcel shelf in an older vehicle.

You should be able to get a mounting installed behind the seats but sometime a bar is required (depending how much plastic trim etc. is in the way). Kids Safe should be able to put you on to an installer (or just look up Yellow Pages), they will know where/how to install the mounting point safely.
The wife had a Delica some years ago, we had 3 points installed in the floor without any problems. We then looked at a few other cars and they all needed a bar behind the 3rd row seats.

    Poop.

Took the Disco to the installer and they said "no way"

The rear seats are not designed to have the child seat straps go over them. The issue being that in the event of a crash the straps could overload the backrest part of the seat coursing the seat to break, thus allowing the child seat to move forward a significant amount.

There is no way to mount the anchor points above the seats as the top of the child seats are past the rear frame of the car (within the window recess).

The issue is not so much the location or method of mounting the anchor points more the design of the 3rd row of seats themselves. This is not good, being able to put kids in the 3rd row was the main reason we changed Discos in the first place.

Anyone know of a thin child seat that you can fit 3 in the middle row of a Disco 2?
