Just taking guesses at precisely which ones they want $158 for each one of the AU sensors (they dont list an option for pump)

Repco is about as far from intelligence as you can get.

Before replacing fuel pump check fuel pressure - there is service port on the fuel line (see rave manual). I had similar simptoms with my car (no faults on MAF, some faults on oxy sensors, good idle but lazy kickdown whith backfire to inlet manifold), the reason was MAF sensor. Like your mechanic i was shure that there was not enough fuel (simptoms are the same), i didn't checked fuel pressure and replaced fuel pump. It was was wasting money and did'nt help.
The only way to test MAF, as i found out, is to compare its readings whith readings on the good working engine (here was the post where owners layed out readings from the MAF on different rpm's). Mine was wide of the marks. So i replaced it by nonOEM, and it started to work fine in all conditions.
P.S. in your case it may be not MAF, because simptoms may be the same. All i tried to say - is that before replacing not cheap sensors make shure that diagnostics was right.

Same either side, and as Seryl points out u can check pump! Mechanics! If the pump is dodgy they seem to let you know in quite an audible fashion! I always do the cheap diagnosis fixs first.
The easy way is throw new bits hither and yon,which as others say is not the best or cheapest way Exhaust all avenues before pointing any item as culprit .

Smooth enough at idle, no go up hill and forget about overtaking

Is the gearbox kicking down to a lower gear as you press the pedal to the floor going up a hill.
Thats presuming its an auto

... eventually... but cant get revs up to encourage it so takes a while (would rather look at fuel thingies first before transmission thingies if thats what you are getting at )

I will try track down my CD and find the bit on the fuel pressure test and get him to do it before I cough up (both of us would prefer MAF problems by the sounds of it)
