    Fuel pump...or fuel tank...or??

    Hi peoples
A couple of months ago I had Larry in for a fair few bits & pieces at the workshop. Among them a new fuel block and a new fuel pump.

The old pump had been screaming it's head off for a couple of years, in fact hadn't been great since about 6 months after I put it in. Symptoms also involved poor or no starting when the tank was below about 1/4, this was a lot worse in hot weather. I would always have to wait for the system to pressurise before starting and sometimes do a system purge to get going.

So...in with the new pump and hey-presto...the whining sound of cavitation when the tank gets down around a quarter...sounding familiar?

My question is, (before I go back to the workshop and "warranty" another pump out of them), if anyone has a similar experience with this? I am running a Long Ranger 135L tank - is this problem perhaps related to the pump and tank in combination? I recently sold my '99 manual with a standard tank and there was zero pump noise and no issues right down to the reserve light coming on.

There are no other obvious leaks and the injector washers were done a year or two ago. It was suggested to me once that it could be due to a rupture of the fuel rail within the head . Does this seem feasible?

    TIA
    Cheers

    Hi Mike,

I run a similar sized long ranger tank in my 110 TD5 and have had absolutely no issues with the fuel pump. I have only run it down into the last quarter a few times and only once until the warning light came on (just to check it worked) but no howling, gurgling or screaming from the pump what so ever.

As for the fuel rail I dont really know, it doesn't sound likely to me. But if it was 'ruptured' then the fuel would end up somewhere or else maybe gasses in the fuel. If gasses in the fuel then bubbling in the tank. You could fill it right up and check for the latter symptom. Ruptured fuel rail sounds odd to me though.

What about the power supply to the pump, have you checked that it is good? You could try swapping the relay out for one on another vehicle. This is just a thought mind, not even sure if the power supply would be relivent.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted,

    Ian.

check you fuel filter housing for both a tight seal and whether the no return line isnt working properly. My D2 with a 135 ltr tank would often "run out of " fuel at about 40 litres left. repacedthe housing and all good to empty

Mike I have had similar problems at work and the cause was diesel bug in the tank blocking the strainer at the bottom. Diesel bug seems to be more prone in steel aftermarket tanks ! Hope this helps from Scott

    Hi Ian
Thanks for the info and thoughts. Yeah I thought a rupture sounded odd - how would you know without an x-ray of the head? Good to hear it cause you no drama, I felt it probably wasn't the tank; with them being fairly popular i would have thought it might have been raised/identified before. Not even sure how the tank would affect it anyway...
I'll check the relay, wish I'd done that before I sold the other Td5

    Hey Trog,
Thanks, I'll look at that and check. There's certainly no visual signs of a leak from the filter, but that's not proof. I replaced some of the fuel lines about a year ago, due to the "chafing" issue, but thanks - I'd forgotten about that and will double check this too, however there's no fuel smell around the car.

Maybe I've just had a bad run of pumps...oh I should point out they have all been "genuine" pumps, due to the alleged issues with the aftermarket ones.

    Cheers

    Hi Scott
Ok! That is something I had not even considered Last time I looked in it, the tank look clean. I'll definitely do some research on this and could explain why a new pump "fails" so quickly...Thanks mate!

Check the fuel pump earth near the relay box under the bonnet. Take it off and clean it. Corrosion there caused no end of agro for my disco with noisy intermittent pumps and other symptoms. It's only a one minute job.

    Hello,
Sounds like it can not pick up the fuel, there should be no blockage as new pump, mine the screen inside the pump was blocked and did the same thing at a 1/4 tank take the white casing off and a filter inside which fits onto the inlet of the pump. Silly question is the pump on the bottom of the tank ??

    Mike,
I have the same tank and have had the same noise since the tank was fitted in early 2010 with no ill effects.

Stallie, thanks I'll have a look at that on Sunday, probably worth doing regardless

Ian, well I fitted the last one and that was resting on the bottom of the tank, but this one I don't know...brand new pump so unless there is a lot of crud and diesel bug in there it shouldn't be blocked

Hi Roger, so the pump is noisy, but causes no problems...curious...

    Cheers
