Dodgy seals would be the cause. Vibration alone is enough if the seals are bad enough as Blknight says.

How complicated is it to change the seals in the MC and SC for someone with only basic mechanical ability? Also, is it actually worth doing rather than changing over the whole assemblies? Could it be for example that the barrels of the cylinders are scored or imperfect meaning the seal change might only last for a short period?
Is there a seal kit?

It seems to be common practice nowadays to replace rather than refurbish.
Not sure if seal kits are available?, but the cost of replacements is not too excessive and you will have peace of mind that it is not going to fail due to something you didn't do quite right.

It is possible to get seal kits for both M/C and the S/C . But as SiddersC says Whole of assembly replacement is the preferred option nowadays. The units seem to not last anywhere near as long with replacement seals in original cylinders as a complete new unit! I have had variable success with overhauls , with failure rates within 6mths for no apparent reason common, other times 2yrs.
Once upon a time if you replaced seals it was certain you would get as long as original!
Cheers Scott
