Should I change the front prop shaft before big trip.

    G'day all.
Crystal ball time here. We are about to leave on our 4th big trip ( to Maroochydore QLD 3 weeks off ) with the van in tow. I am wondering if I should change out the front drive shaft before leaving. My D2a has 87000k's on it. There is nothing wrong with the original shaft at the moment. The front uni and slip joint are greased every 10000k's and the DC joint has no play in it and the seals are good. No noise. I want to change it out for a shaft with a greaseable DC joint sooner rather than later anyway. So should I do it before we go? Thoughts?
    Regards

Camped next to a bloke in Winton Caravan Park a few days ago, he had a D2 Td5, he said he was held up in Barcaldine for a week waiting for new front shaft from Brisbane after his old one had failed, at least he is happy now that he has a greasable shaft.

From memory mine died at about 75,000km. But seeing it seems to be fine at the moment and you are not going off the beaten track, I'd probably leave it until it starts to play up.

YES, exchange it for a new greasable unit, last thing you want is replacing it while away.

My one went at 98k km (2004 Td5 manual) and I don't tow anything. Personally, if you haven't already done so, I'd change the rear drive shaft with the rubber donut for a shaft with a cardan uni . I went through 3 donuts in 120k km, the last two being when away.

A couple of friends with D2s recently upgraded to the Tom Wood drive shaft.

Both bought them from Rovacraft. Both had major vibration issues. One returned his and replaced with a LR genuine one, the other got the Tom Woods rebuilt. The Tailshaft place he took it to immediately recognised the cheap Chinese unis in the tail shaft, and replaced them with good quality ones. This resolved the vibration and the low rev shudder he had, which he'd put down to chipping the TD5 and running 235/85-16s on the D2a.

I've read of several members here having problems with the Tom Wood shaft, so if you're going to go that way, then have it sorted out prior to installation.

My D2a is at about 230K with the original shaft (to my knowledge), but there's no lift or large tyres. Since you're towing, why not buy a 2nd hand unit from a low km Jap import D2 and carry it in the van, just in case.
