    TD5 Loud Rattle.

    HI Guys.

I have always had a loud rattle in the engine and it is getting worse. it sounds like Timing chain rattle but it doesn't increase speed with revs. so it is very constant.

cant find anything loose harmonic balance is good and that would change with revs

    any Ideas?

    mattg,
when my harmonic balancer was on its way out i had a loud rattle that seemed to be at the top of the timing chain, i changed the fan hub bearing but that was ok but with furthur investigation i found it was the harmonic balancer.

I suggest you drop the fan belt off and have a good look at the balancer.

The removal of the fan belt then allows the H/B to rotate to the metalic stops as the rubber internals have let go---big fix --- make your own tools to remove the H/B and remember to order the new retaining bolt with it. I also purchased a 500mm extension for my socket set and used another 1" steam pipe extension on my tension wrench and took it way beyond it's stops--BEST OF LUCK--- and remember to cover the radiator I used 2" foam

I had a metallic noise at the front of the enginge.
Changing the bearing of the Fan was the solition.

    Thanks guys
Wouldn't an issue with the balancer increase the rattle as revs increase?
Also I put a new bearing in 12 months ago rattle was there before and after.
Also rattle still there with heat shield removed all together?

Will take the fan belt off and check the balancer again. Cheers

A HB issue would change as revs increase. This stays constant

Rattle still there with heat shield removed.

Replaced fan bearing last year. Rattle didn't change.

Will take the belt off tonight and double check the HB.

    Cheers Matt

We had the Harmonic balancer go on our Disco 2, it isn't a massive job but its still a bit of a challenge. The easiest method is probably to take the radiator out all together just to be on the safe side and it allows better access to the part. They aren't cheap though around $700 new non-genuine and genuine is about $1500 so we called up the wreckers and they sold us a really good one for $200. Massive saving, you'll need a torque wrench that can go up to a high torque setting cause they have to be very very tight. Good Luck

Go genuine for a Harmonic Balancer, they're not the sort of part you want crapping out on you at 100kmh after 20k kms.
Torque it up to 340lb/f or 460nm.
