I was advised (by the salesperson!) that they are suitable if you are planning on getting the car going again so you can sell it!

    Pretty honest, I thought.

Do you regularly run the tank low?

As in run it down to the amber light before refuelling?

Lots of idling in traffic each day?

This will really shorten its life.
So will blocked intake screens. Is your tank clean or do you have bugs in there?

My understanding is that the fuel in the tank acts as a heat sink for the pump, so the less fuel in there the hotter the pump gets, & the faster it wears. Not sure about the idling bit though, unless the airflow from driving fast also helps cool it??

After the third fuel pump in 6 months, my local mechanic asked one disco owner how she filled her car.

She never filled above 1/4 tank, always ran around on empty.

As mentioned above - the cooling effect of the fuel assists pump life.

The idling in traffic is a heat factor as the fuel going through the head is just recirculating in large volume and not being consumed.

Some slight cooling occurs when driving from air across tank, but not significant.

The main factor is the low levels...

the exact same reason it takes longer to boil a gallon of water as opposed to a pint of water.
