I've decided my TD5 crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer is gone at 180k. I just hope I haven't damaged the crankshaft. I now live in northern Victoria, having moved from Canberra where I went to Canberra Motor Works. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in Melbourne or to the north for this type of job?

double check prices I got mine from the UK at around 1/2 the Aussie price and done the work myself saved heaps and had a good look arond the engine bay, made some tools, bent some more, skinned some knuckles and got to know the TD5 just a little bit better don't forget to order the retaining bolt with the H/B as the old one is a throw away[been streatched]![]()
At 180K, its worth replacing the oil seal behind the h/ balancer while you have the balancer off.
A friend and I replaced one on his early TD5 a couple of months ago. We'd never done it before, but we had the job completed inside two hours. The longest part was removing the radiator. I think the D2a would be a little faster as the headlights don't need to come out for the grille to be removed.
If you do it yourself you can inspect & renew other parts, like hoses, clamps and thermostat. Also a good chance to remove all the EGR plumbing.
If you are near Shepparton, Shepp 4wd centre are very good.
There is supposed to be an excellent LR mechanic in the Albury/Wodonga area. Someone local should be able to give details if you are close.

Ditto no need to be taking the radiator out to change it. Two person job about an hour tops .
Sorry should should have said you need someone to turn the starter with fuel pump relay removed while you hold a half inch drive breaker bar firm against the left side chassis rail .
