My car has a crap replacement radio head. It looks bad, and can not be controlled from the steering wheel remote buttons.
I want to go and buy an original L/R unit off e bay or some such like and go back to how it should be.
As long as I get the four digit code, is there anything else that may stop me doing this?
Its a 2004 D2 TD5.

Steering wheel control adapters are readily available, so you should be able to control any head unit with a wired remote input from the steering controls.
That said I can understand the sentiment about the head units looking crappy compared with the stock unit.

If you're interested I have my original LR CD player/radio with the security code you can have for a small price. I only removed it so I could connect and iPod.

But as stated there are more modern players that have iPod connectivity and work with the steering wheel controls.

I have just replaced my standard unit because the AM radio reception is completely hopeless IMHO. I replaced with a JVC unit which looks great and the steering wheel controls from UK give me more options (I can change through AM/FM/CD as well as station to station/track to track. I now get Sydney AM reception 3 to 5 times further than before.
After market head units have some great features including bluetooth, usb inputs, iPod connectivity and operation, etc.
I have a 2004 base moodel Disco and there were some traps with choosing and setting up a remove steering wheel adapter. Search for my threads on this.

Yes I see where you are coming from but I have to say I like originality as well.
My car is an ES TD5 built Dec 2004 so it could be one last.
My V8 ES here in PNG does have the original unit and I think it looks better! Each to their own I guess. I have installed a BT unit and iPod connection in the V8.
Have to admit though that I don't use that last mod much because I'm too busy listening for odd noises from the engine!

I don't really listen to the radio for music but for news and informative programs. That means ABC local radio and occasionally, ABC Radio National. Both are at the low end of the dial here (576 and 702) and this end of the band seems very prone to interference. With original radio, could not drive under a bridge or through a short tunnel without the program disappearing and loud static remaining. Doesn't happen with new radio. There's just no comparison. The dynamic sound options give music sound which is much better too.
I'm no longer trying to sell you - really. Just how it worked for me.
