    TD5 towing advice

I have just bought a 2001 Disco TD5 to tow my horse float with. It seems to be really really slow in hilly areas or when getting going initially but cruises along nicely on flat ground. I was struggling to keep 50km/hr recently up a reasonable hill towing 1 horse yet Hiluxes, Rangers, Navaras were flying past me towing 2 horses (I also have a new float at 1100kg and the horse is 500kg- so not a huge load).
I am not sure if this fairly standard for Discos or have I got a dud? It is also not a car I would overtake in on the highway even without a trailer as it seems to have no get up and go. Having said that I have followed advice from a friend saying I should not let diesel revs get much above 2500 rpm- so as it nears high 2000's I back off the accelerator for fear of overloading it and blowing it up. Is this just bad advice?
Do others tow in 3rd gear or drive? Is there any time that it is appropriate to use the 'mode' button when towing?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Mine tows a lot better when the auto is in "S" mode and I leave it in Drive. Dont worry about the revs, it wont blow up and you will find it tows a lot better like this. I'm not sure if yours has a problem, but they dont fly up hills with a load on the back.
    Cheers

My disco is a 2002 manual Ihave no problems reving it to 3000 rpm while changing gears as for towing in drive Ihave always been told don't tow in over drive Iwould have the auto checked and put in a larger oil cooler for the auto .

My boat weighs in about 1--2 ton and the TD5 is quite a good towing machine --drive it like you stole it--if still sluggish, check turbo hoses,MAF sensor etc lots of advice of how to on this site in good oil etc good luck

The auto changes under full throttle at 4200RPM and the max revs are 4800 RPM, so you are being very conservative indeed. And yes IMHO it is bad advice.

You may be better at 3000plus in third up hills than at 2500 in top, and your EGTs will be lower.
I must admit that I am new to TD5 also and have not yet towed my camper, but without a camper my TD5 Auto has more torque up hills than my highly modified 3.9 V8, so I see no reason it should be slower. However mine is a 2002 EU3 which has 40NM more than a 2000 model.

rev it.....I used to pull up the toowoomba range at 4000 in 2nd towing a horse float and its easy.....the instruction manual tells you its ok ....recommended to tow in 3rd....yes you have been given wrong advice....at 2000rpm the engine hasn't developed maximum torque and power.

Be aware that EGT's rise quite rapidly when towing and giving it a good right boot! That situation can lead to warped manifolds and head gasket problems it seems.

Yeah, give it more revs. Mine will accellerate best with the taco sitting on 3000rpm and just hauls away and changed gears without the taco moving. Then back off and 100kph and the auto locks up and the taco falls to about 2250rpm at close to 100kph.

    Happy Days.

More revs/lower gear seems to be the solution here. I guess you won't know how it works for you until you go out and give it a go

Geez, and I thought I was a conservative revver!
Then the other day, after reading PhillipAs comments, I put it flat to the floor.
    Phwoar.....
Give it a bit more stick. It can take it.
And perhaps get an extra trans cooler and EGT gauge if you're towing.
