    And perhaps get an extra trans cooler and EGT gauge if you're towing.
    Yeh mate, Mines chipped and new turbo by the previous owner. I dont think the turbo is anything special, just replaced by neccesety but go! In the wet, it'll spin the front wheels until traction control steps in. I think thats pretty good for a 2t, 4x4 with a 2.5L Diesel.

    If you are still not happy with the performance you can chip it, put on a larger intercooler and a VNT turbo.

    wow- that was fantastic feedback. Thanks for the advice everyone. I love the advice 'drive it like you stole it'. I will get braver with it and see how I go.

    I had a 2000 D2 TD5 auto for a few years, now a D3. I tow a 2.7t boat and at other times a Jayco poptop. This is about the D2.

    Early on I made the mistake? of fitting an upgraded ECU. Hey – I could now tow the van at 100kph easily! After a couple of caravan trips I blew a turbo. Perhaps just a coincidence (139000km)

    So I fitted an EGT guage (probe in a new tapped hole just before the turbo) and discovered that high power easily exceeded 800 degrees C when 725 or thereabouts seems to be the safe limit. All driving from then on was by the EGT, never over 700. This meant mostly not using the cruise control towing as any slope would quickly pull high EGT.

    I also looked at the auto gear ratios and 3rd is 1:1. This probably means that the sun gears are doing nothing and it is all locked up, and converter is locked up too, therefore very little heat going into the oil. (Experts tell me if I am wrong please) Therefore I travelled in third gear when loaded. – usually about 95k with the van. I used sport mode when towing and climbed hills on the EGT gauge. Going back a gear reduced EGT markedly. Very slow up steep hills like Willunga Hill SA.
    I did about another 42000k before I sold it with the only issue being manifold studs.

    Like the others I wouldn’t worry about higher revs, it is a small engine, Scania coaches have 12 litre inline sixes red lined at 2500rpm, 1500rpm cruise. Agree you should check the basics for power loss.

    I pull my van with my 99 td5 and have no issues. Went up to Coral Bay last year with my son using his 4.2 Cruiser and could hardly hold 90 kms.
    If you want a bit more towing grunt you can add Gas injection, I have it on mine and get about 20% more power, no real fuel improvement as the TD5 is about as fuel efficient as you can get. I had my tranny rebuilt a few years back and the tech wouldn't do it unless I agreed to have a beefed up torque convertor, made a great deal of difference it holds TC lockup much longer. The techs advice on towing using auto or locking in 3rd was the amount of wear using auto was so much cheaper than the fuel you burn that it was a no brainer. his quote "they made it automatic for a reason"
