Convinced myself to buy 03/04 TD5 Disco

i bought a D2a in mid '04 and it was by far the best LR i ever had.
It was actually also one of the best vehicles i have ever owned.

My eldest son took/stole/borrowed it for good:(
Yes he got it for a bargain.
i should never have got rid of it,it has just clocked 100K.

Apart from the fuel pump that failed last week,and a leaking fuel reg,nothing has ever gone wrong with it,and it has also done more off roading than any other vehcle i have ever had.I did replace the front coils(sagged) and shocks(corrugations wrecked them).

They are a very good model run,but as others have said hard to find a good one.

I think half the problem is so many people dont care about their vehicles these days, they just want them to get them from A to B. Water restrictions over the past few years have ment people couldnt wash their cars then the cars got dirty and generally neglected.

What makes it worse for Land Rovers are they are a little bit unconventional. People dont understand them so they just hope the nigling little problems will go away but they just keep acumliating.

I planned to spend some cash on getting mine the way I wanted it after I bought it. I ended up spending my cash just keeping it running as so many things were unmaintained. Now I'm starting to understand it and starting to modify it slightly to the way I want.

I would say that my aver annual K's would be lower than average, as I work from home, the car will be a second car and I'd say maybe 7-12k per year.

I will only hold it up to 5 years then I will likely move into a Disco 3 (tempted to buy one now but not sure I want to spend 30k on a second car).

I looked at the 200k (auto rebuild) today and it isn't a HSE, its an S, no ACE.

I drove nice and seemed well looked after, but I did have my heart set on the ACE, in saying that it didn't drive that bad when compared to model with ACE around town... maybe I can live without it???

You probably won't notice the difference with or without ACE when driven lightly, I don't really notice it if I am pottering around

SidersC, I drive fairly casually, not into fast driving, with that in mind is there any need then to need the ACE? As far as I can see, if I am not hooking around corners or roundabouts, then what is the need for it?

It does not seem to add any value for offroad performance..

Actually, that last bit is incorrect :)
ACE recognises when it's offroad and uses the rams to maximise wheel travel.
It's a brilliant system.
However.
I had no dramas with my non-ACE model, and I'm not a slow driver by any means.
Having stiffer springs does help, but ACE when working properly is really something to write home about.
If you can find one with ACE then Hooray!
But if you find a good one without it for the right price, it's not the end of the world really.

@DiscoMuppet - Dam! :) I was hoping ACE wouldn't really be that great

The MY99 D2 i had did have ace.
For me,it was something not really needed.
Didn't miss it in the later D2's i had,in fact it was one less thing to go wrong.

Slunnie has also said on this site that it is helpful off road,with an increase in wheel travel.

Muppets is correct, it disengages the ARB in low range giving greater wheel travel
To be honest, ACE wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, sure it's nice if you can find it, but a well set up non ACE vehicle will be just as drive able.
Where the system comes into its own is higher speed cornering or manouvering, the stability and lack of body roll is quite incredible.
This also has some issues as it gives you a false sense of your speed, and you can carry too much speed into corners.
It can also cause a rougher ride on dirt roads as it stiffens up over 40kph, Graeme on here sells a mod to resolve this
Overall, it works well and I am glad I have it
