rebuild, new engine or new car

need some help with a decision

so i had a leak in the 4.0 V8 disco and we found it to be the head gasket plus a few minors here and there. problem is there was massive oil build up and flakey residue all over the rockers and valley. thinking its gone into the block we discovered the block to be very nice which concerned my mate (full mechanic) as for a car that had done 200000 ks there was no sign of wear on the cylinder.

he believes from the evidence he saw something has been done to it before i got it but they didnt go all the way. leaveing the original rings or crap quality ones in it.

so the options i have are
    1. bolt the heads back on and hope for the best
    2. rebuild the engine with new rings and whatever else is needed
    3. get another engine from a land rover mechanic
    4. or new car

what would you suggest and/or how would be the best to talk to for parts engines etc

    cheers

What does your mechanic mate recommend?

Parts are fairly cheap from the UK, machining should not be too expensive?

Most of the $$$ is in labour, which is where a fully stocked fridge and some kind words to your mechanic mate comes in

It really depends on how you feel about the car and if you intend to keep if long enough to warrant the $$$ spent on the engine

Yeah that is the question. But labor isn't a problem so it will be just parts and machining. I am making a cost this weekend but what would you guys budget for parts and machining. It's pretty stock but just redid the suspension and its a good car apart from this so would like to keep it

A rebuild, you know what you've got.

Another engine could be cheaper and could have another problem. Might be good too. Luck of the draw.

A new car would be more expensive and could develop problems. Might be good too. Luck of the draw.

How much money have you got? Lots! Get a D4.

Mine has recently done the head gasket. Bout 192k kms when it went.

I bit the bullet and got the heads sorted, replaced the rad, all hoses, thermo, water pumps etc etc, bit shy of 5k.
The rest of the car is pretty good and I plan on keeping it for good while longer.

Had the disco for about 3 years so far and haven't had to spend any big bucks prior to that, so I figure I'm going ok for a 14 year old car.

Not unusual to have excellent bores on a rover v8 at thise kilometers. Mine still had all the machining marks on head gasket failure at 200k. New valve seats in heads and wack back on.

    Cheers

So long as it hasn't slipped a liner, i'd say just do the heads.

If it has slipped a liner then a rebuild is a part and parcel of the fix.
