I have had one die like unplugging a coil lead on a petrol engine....the cause? Second battery had boiled over due to heat at turbocharger and damaged the plug and wiring to the inertia switch. I rewired it and replaced the corroded switch and all is fine.
Another workshop on the mainland had replaced the injector harness and the CAS to no avail. It was intermittent, too which was quite frustrating.

Should check your CKP loom very closely: a fellow Td5 owner had the same problem, only intermittently. It all started when he had his clutch worked on, so I knew what to look for...
It is not uncommon for mechanics not familiar with this engine (or perhaps any engine at all) pull the gearbox without unplugging the CKP... So in the best of cases the CKP loom gets a good pull and some of the individual conductors within the wires may get cut. Also due to exposure to engine heat this bit of loom becomes hard and brittle with time.
We checked for "static" continuity which was found OK, but upon purposedly swirling the loom it had continuity hicups... Laid a new loom (used some old electric guitar shielded cable) and problem solved.

Broken timing chain in the one I am working on :(

Hi I had a similar problem after fuel pump failure and replacement which I put down to residual air in the system despite following the bleed process carefully.
Had some success today, got the old girl started...
After replacing
Fuel pump
Injector harness
And crank sensor
New main battery
With no success...
I got the contact cleaner and cleaned every plug on the ecu, sensor plugs and loom plugs I could get my hands on.. I found one wire which was partially malted off the main loom near the fuel cooler, repaired that and it cranked and started first time...
No more faults, iv just go to put the car back together now
