Can any thing else go wrong

My 2002 td5 in the last 2 years has destroyed a fuel pump,3 water pumps, radiator,3 central door locks, gear box,air bag suppenion, fuel injection harrness, fuel pressure regulator and a rear diff is there any thing else that is known to die the car hasn't done much off road work and the off road work it has done has been fairly easy. I put spring in the rear of my disco when the air bag blew the ride is a bit firmer but I find the springs more relieable

Excuse me while I say a quick 3 Hail Mary's and promise to be more diligent about checking my oil....as I've had my MY99 Td5 a couple of years now too and only had one out of your list!

That's not to say next week when I start it up it'll throw something new at me.

The VIN of your vehicle can tell you whether the engine head dowels are the newer, ie. non-plastic, type. IIRC there's a stickied thread at the top of the D2 pages that references this.

So, head 'creep' issues and the resultant problems with that are possible if your engine still has the plastic dowels.

Door actuators aren't that expensive to replace but they are a PITA to troubleshoot - and you mention central door locking so you might have already been there with that.

You could check for little things like whether coolant hoses have been replaced in recent years. I'm pretty clueless re V8 variants but on the Td5 there are a couple of places that coolant problems can arise - one is the short little hose kind of hidden behind the turbo - replace it and then you'll know its good. The oil cooler is also in that vicinity and depending on whether the vehicle has been run with the correct coolant over time, there can be corrosion issues within the cooler.

You really just need to scan down the list of thread titles within this D2 section and have a read of some here and there. That takes time I appreciate but you'll school yourself up a heap on new things to be aware of no doubt.

    Best of luck.

I'd keep a close eye on the oil level, see if the Injectors are starting to leak. And replace the transmission cooler lines. They have both stung me.
And just recently I believe an intake hose has split. But haven't fully diagnosed and fixed it yet.

Thats an impressive list. I did head gaskets at 200,000 when I overheated my V8. I have done radiator, alternator and brake master re-sleeve. I have done 2 window regulators. I had the manual trans re-built because of bearing noise - but it would probably have held in there for a lot longer. Replaced clutch then also because it was all opened up, but in reality it had heaps of meat left on it despite towing 2 tonn. All of these things were at about 200,000k. I now have a very reliable unit.

My 95 D1 with nearly 300,000k has original drive train - V8 Auto. It has had a new radiator and new slave cylinders on 3 wheels. It has had a master cyl re-sleeve. It has had an aftermarket coil and dizzy and is the last word in reliability (touch wood) and still goes like the clappers. Its going to my eldest son.

    Cheers

Haha...I meant piston and cylinder - actually one was just new seals and 2 calipers required re-sleeving aswell.

    Cheers

Laney - you are in good hands at British Offroad. I have a fair drive to them also but its well worth it. Andrew, Dan and the lads know their stuff. If you have the blue D2 V8 auto loaner, well...its a bit of a dog. My 02 manual is way quicker and sounds like a real V8 with high flow cats, muffler and pipe work...and they probably still have to fix the air-con compressor which sounds like a gravel truck on speed.

I find that interesting. If you don't mind me asking, were the water pumps genuine parts? What destroyed the radiator? Did you have the vehicle from new, if not, did it have a service history? What year is your D2? The reason I ask, my D2 has over 360,000 KM's on it, 2000 model. The previous owner had all receipts for work done. According to him, still the original fuel pp., water pp. , FPR., I have had the transfer case mod. done by MR Auto, to fix the oil leak, the previous owner changed the ABS doovealacky, I have changed the harness for the modified one, original radiator & intercooler. This vehicle towed a caravan around Australia, twice. [ previous owner] I try to maintain this vehicle to a high standard myself, within my limits, Do you do your own servicing? I suggest the RAVE DVD, would be a good purchase. Chin up mate, when you get on top of it, you will find you have a great 4WD, Bob

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
