I've been using Penrite for 20+ years without issues. For both road and race/rally applications. The only exceptions are the high RPM engines I build on commission, by high my reference is 12,000rpm +.

you sure you want to use a 15w 50 in canberra??
have read here--

and I'd run a trans cooler rather than oil cooler.
Dont forget the trans was built to handle just 340nm's
I'd hope yours ( and mine) put out more than that
Ditto what Pedro said.
Out of Penrites oils I'd use Racing 10 in a HiPo V8, it has the most robust additive package out of all their petrol biased oils and it's perfect for flat tappet engines.
I'm using HPR 5 ATM in an engine that flogs oil and it's good, but Racing 10 will be going in next fill just to combat (potential) shearing.
I missed the engine oil first time around, but HPR15 is silly heavy and just not needed, you'll put way too much strain on the oil pump drive for one thing, and the drag will just cost HP, and as Pedro mentioned the xW-40 oils will be a lot nicer cranking and will warm up/flow more quickly around the top end on a -7* start. ;)
Rang a couple of Cummins dealers today to enquire about PG Platinum. First one did not have it, or seem to even know about it, the second said that a coolant called PG XL is what they use and it is the same stuff.
I hate it when I am relying on the advice of a salesman who says brand x is the same as brand y
Whilst typing this I have just received an email from the second cummins dealer(I asked for it in writing that it was the same product) This is the email.
After seeking clarification it turns out that PG Platinum is sold through Cummins as TEC Infinity.
TECPGXL is equivalent to Fleetguard PG Plus.
If Cummins market it as PG Platinum why can't dealers have it. This ****s me.
A follow up of my previous post.
I rang a Cummins hotline number to find out if they have any agents in the Shepparton area. They gave me a list of some of the truck places that can purchase and sell Cummins stuff.
One of them was the large Kenworth dealer, so I rang them. Guess what. Not only do they sell PG PLATINUM, they stock it.
Their price $110 for 20 litres:)
Cummins price for TEC Infinity(supposedly same stuff) $169 20 litres.:(
Hi Pedro and Rick
I've got the oil now!! HPR15. The more I had read about oil pressures and the relatively old design of the block etc I saw 15w oils mentioned a few times as being more suitable. I did ask Roland at ACR what he thought and he had no problem with that weight of oil. I haven't seen -7 yet in Canberra! It will be getting an oil change a lot more frequently than the previous owner ever gave the current motor so the oil I have won't last that long and I'll look at the PREMIUM 10 (10W-70) Full Syn. I'm running it in with the Penrite running in oil which is a high Zinc oil.
The trans was beginning to feel in need of a refresh as well so we decided to give the disco an overhaul so it's good for the long haul (hopefully). I looked at rebuild of the trans but after deciding on the 4.8 as the motor it was cheaper to get a 4hp24 from Ashcrofts with the largest TQ. I've already put a trans cooler on. It might be a bit of a belt and braces approach but after investing what I have so far (time and money) I don't want leave the job half done. Plus the more I read the more paranoid I get
Cheers
Mike
In this case it is the same yes. I sell it at work. You can also pick it up at Taig bros in Shepp as well.
$110 is the going price for PG Platinum. Yes its the same as the Cummins TEC Infinity. Its made by Fleetguard in Kilsyth, Melbourne. Fleetguard is owned by Cummins Filtration. Just a different label. Same as some oils.
Its what i use in my D2 with Td5. You can also by it in 4lts, 205lts and 1000lts if you like as well.
If your cooling system has any inperfections, it will find it. Old gaskets can leak, seals etc etc.
It will last rebuild to rebuild if you look after it. 250,000klm easy.
cheers
Todd
