    Nearly bought a 2001 D2...

    Hi everyone,

I joined the community to do research on the discovery. It certainly provided me a lot of great information, enough to change my mind about Land drovers.

Now here's my pain. I've come across a well priced Discovery 2 TD5. It has 2 inch lift snorkel and chipped.

It's pretty good in terms of age. There was one main concern. There is rust around the bonnet hinges. So being cautious I had the car inspected today. The work to fix the rust is giing to cost about $2000. Then there was the discovery of oil in the wiring loom. This is a concern. The seller said the wiring loom was upgraded but I can't find anything that shows this.

All this aside the truck is set up to go and it's comfortable. The 4wd place that did the inspection was pretty good but warned me off the vehicle. He questioned me if I really wanted a Land Rover. I admitted the price was the main factor and that it was comfortable and based on plenty of research here and other web sites a suitable truck for my needs.

So... given the oil in the loom and the rust that will take about 2k to fix (and fix heater while dash is out) am I best to walk away or is some of the advise based on the land rover reputation?

I did not a large number of land cruisers there. :-)

    Thanks.

    Peter.

Oil in the wiring loom costs about $100 to fix, and an hour or two of time, if you can do it yourself.

I have never seen or heard of rust at the bonnet hinges.

What has to be done to the heater? And why is the dash coming out?

Did you take it to a LR specialist, or just a generic 4WD place? If generic, then I'd reckon they want you to buy something that they can get the work on. A lot of LR owners do their own work, so a generic shop is unlikely to see them all that much.

By the way, welcome, this is the biggest collection of LR knowledge in the country for sure.

I am wondering what response you expect to get from a forum community of land rover lovers?

Absolutely, buy it if its good value for money. All off road vehicles with age will require continued investment to keep on the road.

Adding to this, I've never heard of an Aussie D2 having issues with rust, certainly not 2k worth.

There's not a real shortage of D2s on the market at the moment, as far as I'm aware.
Be prepared to wait for that one that's simply too good to walk away from.

    Thanks winaje.

The shop was a generic 4wd place. The LR specialist shop is closed for annual holidays and I want to gave and inspection done before buying.

The rust at the hinges I saw on inspection myself and I have concerns about it. The guy who did the inspection said aboyt 2k to fix (both hinges have rusted). To get to the location he said the window wilk gave to come out and rake out the dash.

Because the heating doesn't work it makes sense to get it fixed at tge same time.

Apart from some leaks though (expected) the truck isn't too bad.

The oil in the loom set of alarm bells based on what I'd read before.

    I guess it's a case of the $ 100 fix and monitor?

I don't mind spending a bit to fix the rust just worried about the potential costs blowing out. I guess that's the risk.

    Hi mundy,

I expect the combined wisdom of such and amazing forum.

    Open and honest responses.

Winaje has already said the oil in the loom issue isn't a big deal.

    I didn't know that.

I'm balancing a potential biased view with the view of the community here. :-)

    Hi disco muppet,

The selling price is $7k. With a possible 2k for the work to fix the rust.

That's 9k. For that it's lifted snorkel chipped ace removed and sway bars in place and 265k on the clock.

Oh and heater isn't working well. Which given how cold it is here is a real issue.

    $7k is pretty good.
Ace removed? Not a common mod here, very common in the UK.
Oil in the loom as mentioned isn't a major issue. find out a bit more about it if you can, got a link?
So on one hand, it's not a high price.
But would you prefer a better one for a bit more?
    It's all up to you.

If it has rust in the bonnet "similar to U.K disco's" would mean to me to also check the hidden crevices as it has very likely being somebodies snow-mobile doing a lot of winter runs from Canberra to threadbo, perrisher etc. This means salt on the road sprayed all over the underside of that disco. But it's no different to grabbing a coastal disco that has done a lot of salt water boat launches, just be aware of the need to wash out everything underneath thoroughly and rustproof it well.
