    D2 V8 Oil Additives

Anyone ever invested in Oil Additives before? Any results or difference?

I currently use fully synthetic 5w 40 for my constant start stop driving. Change it every 6 months without fail. My motor has done 90k and is tip top.

However, Polymer based oil can be added which has no particles which conditions and brings O-Rings and Seals back to life. Sometimes sold as conditioner some times a Stop leak.

Sounds a good product but it's $30 for 1 litre to add to oil changes..

    Anyones used it?

"Bringing seals back to life" is done by chemically reacting with them.

It's a stop gap measure that does more harm than good.

    Avoid additives...

All the "additives" you'll ever need are already in the oil you use.
Brand is irrelevant, what matters is the SAE rating, and if you are changing every 6 months, it doesn't matter whether it is fully synthetic or mineral oil. If anything, a false economy to be using synthetics with that schedule, unless the vehicle is subject to extreme stress conditions constantly.

Penrite every 8k - 10k and high mileage motors with excellent oil pressure and very little wear. Just run a good oil and frequent changes.

    Cheers

Interesting you say about false economy, as the local LR Specialist only uses 5w40 Fully Synthetic and advices 6 monthly service. However, my father a retired mechanic of 55 years said yesterday on this subject that unless it's burnt and looking pretty black and you have been pushing it hard give it 12 months should be fine on this type oil.

So do you believe your father who has knowledge and no vested interest, or your mechanic who has a mark up on the 5lts you could buy from Repco yourself, plus his labour cost?
2 important things to consider re change frequency:
    1. Work rate: is the vehicle subject to extreme hard driving high load conditions regularly or hardly used at all leaving it standing idle for weeks? If so 10K could be too long.
    2. Do you use it for short runs to work and back and barely getting it warmed up? This can allow oil to dilute due to slippage past the rings of the enriched fuel mix, promoting acidic corrosion and poor lubrication due to the thinning of the oil properties. Again a possible extreme condition requiring more frequent changes.
An average 15-20K per year vehicle, subject to the same average use and running quality products meeting or exceeding the design requirements, can easily have a longer maintenance interval (allowing for the usual checks at refuel time...check all fluid levels and tyre condition etc...simple visual stuff that should be a habit for any motorist, but it isn't ).

I did the grand distance of 4k last year between annual safety check. going to be about 6k this year. Car goes on the freeway for weekenders and may do a 500 or more K over a few days, otherwise Home > School > Parking at ferry which is around a 5k round trip about 2-3 times a week. Whilst the wife drops the kids get into the School Care I usually sit with the engine running for that 5 mins . The fully Synthetic is still pretty clean come oil change and it never looses oil.

Time to change the oil myself come September maybe still use the 5w 40 as i'm not paying the Mark Up. Annual Safety Check will find anything that needs to be looked at!.

Plus my father comes to stay every 6 months, so I can keep him occupied!

Idling for that 5 minutes will be doing more damage than your oil choices could.
