I feel that the standard Disco cupholders in the (fragile) slide-out tray are possibly the worst that I have ever encountered. And the accessory ones mounted on the side of the centre console are possibly the best ones ever.
Years ago I read a report that a U.S. survey had shown that the single most important feature that people looked for in a new car was the cupholders. I thought "typical, those yanks have the weirdest set of values", but since then I have come around to the opinion that they are a damn good idea, and the accessory ones now fitted, with their variable size and mug-handle cutout, are just the shot.
Now to address some of the other Discovery affronts to ergonomics, such as the clock located near your passenger's knees, and the horn buttons that are impossible to locate when you are taking evasive action.

This has been on the back burner for me for a while due to other issues like warped manifold gaskets, ABS modulator faults, leaking radiator from top right SELF TAPPING METAL SCREW. You know the usual LR stuff. Definitely looking at this once my disco calms down for a few months.
And my thumbs just sit on the horn buttons now; it's either naturally or a learned behavior due to idiots on the road. Anyways thanks for the update. Reminds me to look at this after I pre-emptively change my ignition barrel.
