R380 Gearbox
G'day y'all,
I have not read it anywhere as yet but I have been looking at upgrading the ECU on my 99 Disco. I have all over the net looking at different types of upgrades, including the plug ins.
I spoke to my land rover mechanic about the extra power outputs some guys are getting out of their units and he gave me a warning about over extending the limits. Not only does it put extra strain on the engine components but also that the R380 gearbox, says R380 because it represents 380nm, which is the max that gear is designed for.
I found that quite profoundly interesting. Hope it is of interest to others.
Cheers,
D2D

Not quite the whole story
The R380 in its original incarnation was rated at 380 nm however there were many modifications without any change to its name.
The Suffix L is significantly stronger than the original (All Td5s had the suffix L) I read that Ashcrofts indicated that they were OK up to 440 nm
That said some of us are putting a lot more than that through them without issue but I would be careful with 5th gear.

My R380 has also failed , silent and no hints of trouble one day, noisy the next. Fitted with hd oil cooler and changed the syntrans every 20k, and last change only about 1000km prior to fail, with no more than normal amount of hair on plug magnet & no debris in oil.
The gearbox is cactus after continuing to drive a further 1700km to Sydney, Fitted with new Ashcroft R380 w HD rear support bearings , so will be trouble free from now.
My Td5 is remapped and I rarely change back to 4th up hills whilst towing.
apparantly that is the problem, the regular Td5 tune is so gutless you do need to change to 4th so the R380's normally last longer.
Interestingly the new vehicle I'm looking at buying has a 400nm twin turbo engine, and its ZF 6S400 gearbox is also rated at 400nm, but of all the faults / complaints on the Iveco forum there is not one issue of gearbox failure, I certainly wont be holding back from using sixth either.
