Thread: Is 265/75/16 too big?

My wife's D2 had 245/70/16 on it which have now been replaced with 265/75/16 the only thing that I have noticed with the bigger size is the speedo is about 8kph out which according to my GPS which effects the fuel economy.

You may have problems with them fitting if you still have the standard bumper bar fitted.

Hi Danny, I have 265/75/16 fitted to my d2,standard suspension they don't rub on the standard front bumper but do rub on the radius arms? when on full lock, my speedo is about 8/10km out as well but I just use the gps for speed as for full economy I get around 950km per tank on the highway and 800km around town.

Im on an android so cannot copy and paste, but if you look up Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands it will give you all tyre sizes and problems for a LR Disco 2.

My tyre guy actually told me last week that my Disco2 can legally go to 70mm. It was Bob Janes in Strathpine, cant remember the salesmans name, but very very helpful. Even though they didnt stock Hankooks he pointed me to another place that had the cheapest prices. I ended up buying what are supposedly rated as no.1 allround tyres, beating some big players, with the Hankook Dynapro MTs 235x85x16s which work out .1 larger in height than your 265x75s.

Im really impressed with these, but the problem I had at that height, was that they rubbed on the front wheel arch inner panels when even slightly turned, so I needed to remove only the very front plastic bottom inner guard panel (7 screws I think) so now you can see the bumper bar from inside. But they fill the wheel arch out perfectly that you dont see this anyways unless you have the wheels turned.

Second the wall height rubbed on the front inner side mudflaps on half turn, so I cut half off vertically to stop this and give clearance of 5mm. Again you dont see this, but I made a real tidy job of it anyway.

On the bumper bar, the black plastic moulding on the front of the front guards, that wraps around into the wheel well. I needed to take off a triangular shape out of this piece also. Only about 30mm in, and 50mm in length.

The only issue I have now is, that the spare dosnt fit on the back as it hits the rear bar. So im thinking of drilling the spare wheel carrier holes in a different place rather than moving the wheel carrier to only 2 holes which seems like a bodge job IMO. The paper also says you might be able to fudge it by, loosening the nuts and slamming the door shut. Not for me.. Since I run a compressor and have a puncture repair kit always on board, (I didnt buy the spare tyre yet as I anticipated the scenario), so i thinking of maybe just getting a worn out 235x85x16 road tyre that will get me out of any troubles I have, without changing the wheel carrier. This will fit only just. The problem with this is, it isnt aesthetically appealing to me, but it is an option. I think I will buy that new tyre though and drill the wheel carrier holes.

Apart from that, mine dont hit anything else or even bottom out on the stops when doing speed now over a speed hump. Mine is stock suspension, but the only thing I have heard is the Hankooks are a larger than normal tyre, so this could be my issue. Im not regretting this little bit of work, as the soft ride over bumpy roads has made my week! Rem8nds me of a Tonka truk now, I like that tuff but standard look.

Lastly, it changed my speedo from perfect using 235x70x16s, to 7km extra. Power I was worried about, but it still tears other cars off the mark fine. Bugga all effect on performance on my specific car.

Hope it helps, I realize the width is different, but the height is the same...

Thanks for your replies. The speedo is spot on with my current tyres (both sets) and as long as I point out to my wife that the big tyres are on she will slow down. The last ticket showed her over but as the 245/75/16 were on the speedo was showing just over but the 5km high for the tyres threw her past the cut off zone.
I think I will go for the 265s over the 245 just for the full guard look. I am surprised that between the sizes cost is not that bad.
Does anyone want some 225/75/16 kuhmo kl71s cheap hehe. I will have to sell them off now

when I was looking at 32inch tyres, I couldnt find a pic of a stock Disco2 with them on.

With the spare wheel carrier all you need to do is get a
300mm x 30mm x 30mm bar of aluminium
use wheel carrier as a template for bolt holes
Then re-fit spare wheel bracket with spacers upside down should give about 20mm clearance from the bumper.
