    XYZ Selector Switch Question

Having read previous posts, I have:
    • Checked for oil in the ECU/Harness
    • Checked the rear windscreen wiper works when in reverse
    • All red lights light up next to gear stick when gears selected
    • Dashboard shows correct stick position

However I still have problems starting. I need to flick back to neutral and then to park whilst the ignition is on and then what I turn the key to start it starts with no problems.

Does anybody have any further suggestions as to what this might be please?

Doesn't really give an indication of the XYZ switch functioning correctly.
I wouldn't have thought the XYZ switch caused issues with starting tbh, and if you've got all the correct lighting and indicators then I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
So to clarify, you have it in D, you put it in N then back to D and it starts?

It's in P. Won't start. Move to N or D and back to P and it's fine to start.

    Does that make sense?

Does it catch starting while the lever moving or do you just move it back and forth and then it starts? If it catches with movement on it's way forward, adjustment?

I move it without starting but whilst trying to figure it out it did occasion catch whilst trying to start.

By adjustment, do you mean loosen the bolts on the switch and wiggle it about a bit?

OK I've been out and given it a bit of adjustment on my own, it seems to catch every time now, but it does seem to have a problem finding N (as in the light doesn't light up very easily, a lot of wiggling has to be done, but all the other gears select fine).

So to recap, catches when trying to start, have to move gear lever back and forth to P to actually get it to start.

Does this suggest further adjustment (with two people rather than just me), or the switch is FUBAR?

    Jake,

Do the lights flicker on the gear display if you just move the lever slightly? (ie give it a waggle without moving to the next position) If so, it could just be an adjustment needed or if the adjustment doesn't work it might be worth stripping the switch and giving it a clean if this happens.

Mine was flickering for a while when I got it - the switch rebuild lastest about a year and then it gave up completely - the issue on mine appeared to be the seal around the gear selector shaft wearing out allowing crud in, as I'd already diverted the air con pipes. New switch from Island 4x4 cost about $400.

    Rich

Edit - Just seen your last post! Get someone in the car to select all gears when you do the adjustment below, makes it a bit easier. If that doesn't work then a strip down may be in order.....
