    New Disco 2 owner

    G'Day

I've just bought 2001 td5 for towing and launching the boat and beach driving. Its got 130k on it and seems to drive well.

    I was aware of some of the common problems that this car may have and am starting to find some of these but I must say that so far I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I'd like to fix these issues and was wondering if anyone could provide some advice for;

Traction control, downhill assist and ABS lighting up on dash
    Tail door won't unlock

I also notice that there is a growl/vibe which seems to be coming from the gearbox or thereabouts when she's spinning at 2200 rpm, it's not present at lower or higher revs.

Also, has anyone got an opinion on remapping or chipping up to increase power and torque?

    Hey bud

Congrats on the disco. Great 4x4 when all is a-ok.

The traction control, ABS and hill decent can be anything. You will need to buy a code reader (nanocom seems to be the most popular) to determine what the issue is. The ABS Shuttle valve is a common one that's not an issue but could be anything so you will need to get that checked. Search "3 amigos" and you will have plenty of reading material.

Definitely look up 3 amigos. Amongst others, I've got a post on symptoms and remedies( Look at first and last posts by me.

Growl is most probably engine mounts. The symptoms match. Do a search on this. Check them from underneath by poking a screwdriver or similar in the hole in the middle of chassis rail under mount. If it doesn't go in 10mm or so, then they have collapsed. Post on how to replace on site as well.

Tombie used to do remaps. PM him to check. Mine is by him and its great. JRA (?)in SA (amongst others) do remaps as well. Worth it, as turbo lag pretty well goes away, more mumbo and if not used all the time, better economy.

    Thanks Guys

I've had a good look at the recommended threads etc...Guess I'm in for a bit of frustration sorting out the three amigo's!!! No matter, all good fun!

I've had the car since Monday and have already done 2000 k in it including about 50 k on slippery River Murray floodplain (it just won't stop raining!) and for a standard set-up (235x16 Wranglers) I'm already appreciating the capabilitities of the Disco - this could be a long love affair.

Congratulation... It can be really fun car to work on... So far I have managed to fix most of the problem myself but the only problem I can diagnose is the fuel consumption. I'm running around 15.9L/100km in town area, not sure about long distance yet but definitely not 12 or 13...more like 14L/100km...

Rear door refusing to unlock is mostly due to dust in the mechanism.
On mine I ended up replacing the complete assembly with a 2nd hand unit from USA. Pulled the old one apart a few times and sprayed with electrical contact cleaner but still wouldn't work properly so replaced it.

Rear door: pop the badge off the external handle with a screwdriver, spray locking mechanism with WD.
