Thanks for your advice everyone. I'm only just gearing up to sorry this job out now. The d2 has been off the road (not off road) awaiting my attention since my last post. Would anyone be so kind as to PM me some decent sources for genuine LR parts? Based on previous advice in this thread I'll go original for the pump. :-)

Well, after some more delays, I just ordered a QH water pump from MR auto. Should be here tomorrow. Got the appropriate O-Rings (I hope) and will pick up an 8mm ratchet spanner before I start.
Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to rip into this on the weekend. I miss my disco a lot. It's been sitting around for several months now. I wonder what other gremlins that will cause.

QH?? My pump turned up today. I'm a bit concerned though. I ordered (by phone) a QH water pump, what turned up is a brown box with a sticker thy says AllMakes4x4 PEM500040 country of origin China.
I can't see a Q or an H anywhere. Have I got what I paid ($135) for?
Nope. I got a QH water pump from roverlord off-road spares (on eBay but also a regular visitor to this forum). Was definitely not in a brown allmakes box. Was blue and white from memory with QH in the corner. I wouldn't install it. It's actually cheaper to order from the UK for the QH water pump. But if you can't wait then 130 is about what I paid. Call and be sure to get QH or better. It's a job you don't want to have to do twice in a year.
I wouldn't fit it either. QH parts don't come in brown boxes.
This is the Roverlord listing - the packaging is very clearly QH and it's been the same with other QH parts I've bought over the years for various cars.

That's what I thought. I called MR and queried the part. They were happy to exchange it for the actual QH part (they inventory all their non original water pumps simply as "aftermarket" and appear to only stick one price point in quality.). The bloke I was dealing with reassured me that they have chosen those parts based upon their reliability and quality and use them as part if their regular servicing stock.
MR have been good to me so far with servicing and have been there when I've needed advice. I'm going to see how this pump goes on that basis. It has a 12 month/20k warranty so that gives me so reassurance.
What other failures are possible with a water pump? I can't imagine the impeller failing given the way it is designed and driven. Is it just leaks(rings etc) and bearings they commonly have issues with?

when mine was replaced it leaked almost straight away, mechanic redid the job and same again, when i stripped it down the third time he put a straight edge against the mounting, it was not straight so the pump was not sitting flat.replaced the bracket the pump mounts too and all good.Quote:

Well... Thanks to everyone's assistance so far I have confirmed the water pump was indeed the fault. Looks like the bearing fell to bits! Yay.
Now the snag I'm currently working on is that the pump seems to have bonded tightly with the PAS block/bracket thing. I'm a bit reluctant to continue with my current approach for fear of ruining the contact faces and thus needing to get stuff machined.
Any ideas?
Scratch that. Got it eventually.
Check this out, I'm starting to think that my over active heater (now disconnected) had nothing to do with the heater core at all.
... Just discovered I can't use Tapatalk to upload images. I'll post pics later. Pump is kaput. There's a bit of debris behind the pump also.
Right. Pump no longer leaks. Good.
The debris I mentioned appears to be the remains of the "key" joint between the PAS drive and the pump impeller. This didn't "click" in my head until I had refitted the pump et al.
When I fitted the pump I checked that the impeller felt like it had locked in before bolting it all up. It didn't rotate by hand when it was sitting in place, so I had assumed it was locked into the key (is there a name?).
Is there a way I can verify that the impeller is turning (and the pump pumping)?
